GILMOUR SHIELD

Tournament sponsor Bob Gilmour presents the Shield to the winning Papdale B team

Fifteen primary school teams competed for the 2011 Gilmour Shield, the outdoor 7-a-side competition for primary schools at Picky on Saturday 18th June 2011. On a fine day for football competition was tight as the group stages were played with the top two teams in each group winning through to the quarter finals.

The main excitement in the group stages was in Group 2 where three teams ended up equal on points behind the clear winners Stenness. With both Firth and Stromness B ending up with exactly the same goals count it was down to a penalty shoot out to decide who progressed to the quarter finals. Although Stromness made the better start it was Firth who finally squeezed through 4-3.

There was more penalty kick drama in the quarter final between Dounby A and Papdale D after a tight game ended goalless. It was eventually Papdale who won through 3-2 after the penalties reached the sudden death stage.

In the first semi-final Papdale B overwhelmed their schoolmates Papdale D in a surprisingly one sided match. The second semi-final was a much closer affair. St Andrews A took an early lead but an equaliser by Stenness saw the match level at half time. It was Stenness who scored the decisive goal early in the second half to progress to the final.

In the final it was pre-tournament favourites Stenness who were caught cold by a Papdale B goal just after the start of the match. This was followed by constant Stenness pressure but they were unable to find an equaliser as the first half came to an end. The second half followed a similar pattern with Stenness piling on the pressure and winning a number of corners but unable to get past stout Papdale defenders. They were caught out for the second time in the match when Papdale scored a breakaway goal near the end of the match to secure victory.

At the end of the tournament OYDG Chairman Jim Cormack thanked the teams for putting on a fine competition. He also thanked the referees, Picky groundstaff and Bob Gilmour for sponsoring the tournament for another year. The day concluded with Bob presenting runners up medals to Stenness and the Shield and winners medals to the Papdale B team.

LLOYDS TSB TROPHY 2010/11

Papdale Flyers with the Lloyds TSB Trophy

St Andrews Hurricanes three year domination of primary football competitions was finally ended on Saturday night at Picky when they lost out to Papdale Flyers in the final of the top knock-out competition - the Lloyds TSB Trophy. There was plenty of excitement and tension for the large crowd which gathered to watch the 8 top primary football teams battle it out for the main knockout cup of the indoor season.

Pick of the quarter final ties was an epic battle between St Andrews Hurricanes and Stenness Falcons which ended goalless after extra time to go into a dramatic penalty kick shootout. There was plenty of tension as penalties were retaken and missed. Falcons edged into the lead and looked at one point as if they would secure a dramatic victory but Hurricanes hung in and eventually emerged victors by 5-4. It was bad luck for the Falcons who had put in a sterling performance.

Hurricanes went on to edge out Papdale Kings by a single goal in one semi-final to meet up against their old rivals Papdale Flyers in the final. Flyers had to play at their best to edge out Glaitness United and Stromness Predators to reach the final. A victory for Hurricanes would have seen them win a league and cup double for a record third year in a row.

Flyers took the lead in the final but this was short lived as Hurricanes equalised shortly afterwards to leave a tense end to the match. A well placed long range drive gave Flyers the lead for the second time in the match, a lead which they held to the final whistle. Whilst the 2-1 margin of victory was tight it was the Flyers who deserved to edge the match against their great rivals and compensate for just losing out to the Hurricanes in the league.

REID CRESCENT SHIELD 2010/11

Evie, winners of the Reid Crescent Shield

The remaining other 14 league and 6 non-league teams battled it out for the Reid Crescent Shield in what is usually a difficult to predict competition. Evie who were one of the favourites for the competition won through to the final despite their performances in the early rounds being less then convincing.

In the other half of the draw it was perhaps surprising to see Orphir Torpedos winning through to their first major final in years. Evie confirmed their favourites tag by winning the final 3-0 and go one better than last year when they lost in the final of the same competition. Evie’s one and only Shield victory was back in 1997.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Gordon Wilson presents his newly donated Player of the Year Trophy to Connon Rendall, St Andrews Hurricanes

The presentation of trophies and medals took place at the conclusion of the evening’s play. Jim Cormack, OYDG Chairman opened the presentation ceremony by congratulating the winning teams – Flyers for winning the Lloyds TSB Trophy and Evie for winning the Shield. He also commented on the excitement of having the non-league teams involved in the cup competition with particular mention of the huge level of support provided by the spectators for the smaller teams.

Jim also announced that this year a new trophy kindly donated by Gordon Wilson, Orkney Under 13 coach was to be presented to the Primary Indoor Player of the Year.

He thanked all those that had contributed to a successful competition - Picky management and staff, referees, fixtures organisers, scorers, teams, coaches, parent and supporters.

In conclusion he paid particular thanks to the sponsors of the various competitions: Lloyds TSB, Brian Budge and John Foulis, Steven R Paterson Ltd and Cafelolz@21. Without the kind support provided by the sponsors OYDG would have to cut back their activities considerably.

The trophies and medals were presented as follows:

Week 2 - Saturday 12th February

Saturday night at Picky saw the final two qualifying groups for the Lloyds TSB Trophy. The format of the competition sees 28 teams split into four groups with each team playing each other once. The top two teams in each group qualify for the quarter finals of the TSB Trophy with the remaining teams playing for Reid Crescent Shield.

On Saturday the main drama took place in Group 3. Whilst the top seeds St Andrews Hurricanes comfortably won Group 3, second seeds Papdale Kings looked like they would fail to qualify after having lost 1-0 to Evie. This left them needing to secure at least a score draw against the all conquering Hurricanes to edge Evie out. A late goal secured an excellent 1-1 draw for the Papdale team.

Group 4 was more straightforward with Stenness Falcons winning all their games on the night including a 2-0 victory over Stromness Predators who secured a comfortable second place.

The pick of the non league teams having their first taste of primary indoor football were a young Glaitness Pirates team who finished a very creditable fourth place in their group. This included excellent results against league teams – a 4-1 victory against Firth Spiders and a goalless draw with St Andrews Dynamos. Glaitness look well placed for challenging in future years. St Andrews Twisters also showed up well holding league team Glaitness Rovers to a goalless draw.

Week 1 - Saturday 5th February

Saturday night at Picky saw the start of the indoor primary football Knockout Cup - the Lloyds TSB Trophy. The format of the competition sees 28 teams split into four groups with each team playing each other. The top two teams in each group qualify for the quarter finals of the TSB Trophy with the remaining teams playing for Reid Crescent Shield both of which will be played in a knockout format on Saturday 19th March.

On Saturday matches were played in the first two groups with 14 teams competing including some non league teams who were enjoying playing competitive indoor football for the first time. Papdale Flyers who were the top seeds comfortably won Group 1 and were the only team to win all their 6 games on the night. Fellow seeds Glaitness United came a comfortable second despite having to battle hard to gain single goal victories against Stenness Pumas and Firth Scorpions.

Group 2 was more competitive with the two seeded teams being pushed all the way by Hope Hotspurs. Real Dounby came out on top with a near perfect record, dropping their only points in a draw against the Dales. Having held the seeded Dales to a good draw Hotspurs needed victory against Real to edge out the Dales but they lost narrowly by a single goal. The Dales themselves also had to rely on  narrow single goal victories against Glaitness Spurs and Burray Boomerangs to help them secure second place.

Having their first taste of primary indoor football were Stromness Strikers and Athletico Dounby. A young Athletico team had the best result of the non league teams when they secured a goalless draw against Papdale Vikings.

Week 15 - 26th February

A large crowd gathered at Picky on Saturday night to watch the final night of the Primary Indoor Football League. With both Papdale Flyers and St Andrews Hurricanes undefeated at the top of the league and playing each other, there was no doubt that the winner of the clash of the old rivals would win the Mount Cup.

It was the Flyers who started the match the brighter and they had the bulk of possession in the first half of the game but gradually Hurricanes came back into it and took the lead midway through the game. Flyers appeared to be taken by surprise and Hurricanes scored a second goal soon afterwards. A third goal sealed a well deserved victory for the Hurricanes with the 3-0 scoreline being wider than most observers would have expected before the match. Well done to the Hurricanes and credit to both teams for the excellent quality of football that they have produced throughout the season.

The title win continues Hurricanes recent domination of the competition this being the third year in a row that they have won the league. Remarkably Hurricanes have only lost one league game over the last 3 years – a tremendous achievement for their players and coaches.

It has also been an excellent season for Stenness Falcons who won the Shore Shield for the best placed small primary school and ended up in third place in the league, and the young Stromness Predators who finished in fourth position.

There were some very close matches on the night with pick of the matches being the 1-1 draw between Papdale Kings and Stenness Falcons, and the 2-2 game between Stromness Predators and Hope Hotspurs, where Hotspurs came back from 2-0 down to gain a very good draw.

The other notable result of the evening came at the bottom of the league where Stenness Pumas earned a good 1-1 draw against Orphir Torpedos which enabled them to move off the bottom of the league for the first time this season. As a result Firth Spiders dropped down one place and became the holders of this year’s Wooden Spoon.

The presentation of trophies was held after the final match was played. Jim Cormack, OYDG Chairman opened the presentation ceremony by congratulating the winning teams, and in particular the continued successes of Hurricanes and Falcons. Jim also highlighted the large number of good young Primary 4/5 players that have emerged this season which provides a promising future for youth football in Orkney.

He concluded by thanking all those that had contributed to such a successful competition - Picky management and staff, fixtures organisers, referees, timekeepers, scorers, teams, coaches, parents and supporters. The ceremony concluded with the presentation of trophies by Fiona Bain, representing the sponsors S & JD Robertson Ltd. OYDG would like to thank the very generous sponsorship of the Primary Indoor Football League by S & JD Robertson. The company is in its 24th year of sponsoring the competition and the Youth Development Group is indebted for this long standing and continued support.

Week 14 - 19th February

The Primary Indoor Football league will reach a winner takes all climax on Saturday as the last evening of fixtures are played. Following last weekend’s games its all square at the top with Papdale Flyers and St Andrews Hurricanes unbeaten and with identical records. – the winner of this week’s clash between the two top teams will clinch the league title.

Stenness Falcons, the only other team with a chance of winning the league saw their chances slip when they were beaten 1-0 by the Flyers and 2-0 by the Hurricanes in the evening’s top matches. It was Flyers who took an early lead in their match versus Falcons and despite having opportunities to extend their lead they had to endure a nervous end to the match as Falcons searched desperately for an equaliser. Hurricanes had a slightly more comfortable victory over the Falcons. The Falcons have however guaranteed themselves third place in the league.

It was also a good night for Stromness Predators, Papdale Kings and Inter Dounby who won all their matches on Saturday.

There were good performances by lower placed teams against higher placed opposition particularly Papdale Mighty Marvels who beat Firth Scorpions 2-1 and Stenness Pumas who held St Andrews Dynamos to a scoreless draw. The latter result helped bottom placed Scorpions draw level with second bottom team Firth Spiders. Mighty Marvels also had the comeback of the evening coming back from 2-0 down to hold schoolmates Viking to a draw.

Week 13 - 12th February 2011

It is building up to an exciting climax in the Primary Indoor Football League with only two weeks of fixtures still to be played. The top three teams all won their matches on Saturday night to maintain their positions at the top of the league.

It was not plain sailing for the top two teams however and leaders Papdale Flyers had to rely on a late goal to secure a single goal victory over Real Dounby. They were also pushed all the way in a Papdale derby against Kings eventually securing a narrow 2-1 win.

Second placed St Andrews Hurricanes also had to work hard to overcome Glaitness United scoring a couple of late goals to win the match. Credit to Real, Kings and United for putting up good performances against the leaders.

Stenness Falcons remain in contention after four comfortable victories.

There were also fine performances on the night from Papdale Mighty Marvels with two good victories against higher placed teams – Hope Hotspurs and Firth Scorpions.

Firth Scorpions and Hope Hotspurs were involved in one of the most exciting matches of the night. In an end to end high scoring thriller Hotspurs eventually emerged victorious by 4-3.

Week 12 - 5th February 2011

It was the two Stenness teams that made the headlines after the latest week’s fixtures in the Primary Indoor Football league.

At the top of the league third placed Stenness Falcon’s three victories has secured them the Shore Shield for the best placed small primary school team for the fourth year in a row – an excellent run of victories for the Stenness team. With three weeks of fixtures still to be played the Falcons points total cannot be bettered by their nearest challengers Firth Scorpions.

At the other end of the league schoolmates Stenness Pumas won their first game of the season. The biggest cheer of the evening greeted their single goal victory over Firth Spiders. Well done to both Stenness teams.

There was no change at the top of the league as both leading team maintained their unbeaten records. Leaders Papdale Flyers and St Andrews Hurricanes were however made to work hard - Flyers having to rely on two late goals to beat Glaitness United 2-0 and Hurricanes being pushed all the way by Papdale Kings eventually winning a tight game by 2-1.

Apart from the top three teams the only other team to gain maximum points were Real Dounby who had four victories including a good 2-0 win over Papdale Kings. For the second time this season Glaitness United and the Kings could not be separated. In an exciting match United came back twice to secure a 2-2 draw. United were also involved in another nail biting match with Burray Boomerangs having to rely on a late goal for a 3-2 victory in a match in which the Boomerangs played very well.

Having their best week of the season were Papdale Vikings with two very good victories against higher placed teams Glaitness Spurs and Orphir Torpedos.

Week 11 - 29th January 2011

The top match at the Primary Indoor Football league on Saturday saw the first clash of the season between leaders Papdale Flyers and third placed Stenness Falcons. In a tense match in which both teams had chances with Falcons hitting the woodwork but having to rely on their keeper to pull off a couple of excellent saves, it was the Flyers who narrowly edged the match scoring the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win. The Flyers won both their other two games to maintain their narrow 4 point lead over St Andrews Hurricanes who have a game in hand.

The Hurricanes also won all their games including a narrow 3-2 victory over Stromness Predators. In an exciting match the Hurricanes looked like they were heading for their first defeat of the season when Predators took an early 2-0 lead but the Hurricanes showed a lot of character to come back and maintain their unbeaten league record.

Also staging a good comeback were Papdale Vikings who came back from 2-0 down to draw with Stromness Devils.

The only other two teams to gain maximum points were Evie and Papdale Dales. For Evie it was their best week of the season although they were pushed all the way by Papdale Mighty Marvels edging out the Papdale team after they had staged a comeback after being 2-0 down.

Also putting in their best performances of the season were Orphir Torpedos with good victories against Burray Boomerangs and Hope Hotspurs and an excellent draw against Papdale Kings.

 Week 10 - 22nd January 2011

Following two defeats on Saturday night Stromness Predators have been knocked off the top spot in the Primary Indoor Football League. In the top matches of the evening Predators lost 2-0 to Stenness Falcons and 4-0 to Papdale Flyers.

The Flyers are the new leaders 4 points ahead of St Andrews Hurricanes who have played one game less, with Falcons third a further point behind. The top three teams won all their matches on the night.

It was also a good night for Glaitness United who have moved up into fourth position in the league ahead of the Predators. They won three games but were held to a 1-1 draw in one of the closest matches of the night against Papdale Kings. In an end to end match a late goal seemed to have secured victory for United, but Kings equalised in the very last second of the match. There was a similar scoreline in the Real v Evie match with an early goal helping Evie secure a good draw.

Other exciting matches included the Dounby derby where there was a late winner for Real, and a last second goal also secured a narrow 3-2 victory for Firth Scorpions over Stromness Devils.

At the bottom of the league Stenness Pumas are still looking for their first victory of the season and they will still be wondering how they failed to win their match against Glaitness Rovers. In a match which ended goalless Pumas hit the post, crossbar, and had a penalty kick brilliantly saved by the Rovers keeper. They did however enjoy their best result so far when they staged the comeback of the season securing a draw after being 3-0 down to Stromness Devils.

 Week 9 - 15th January 2011

The Primary Indoor football league resumed on Saturday night at Picky one week later than planned, after the previous week’s fixtures had been postponed due to bad weather.

With the top two teams Papdale Flyers and Stenness Falcons having a week off Stromness Predators took advantage and have returned to the top of the league. They did however drop points in a goalless draw with Papdale Dales a game in which the Dales played well and they also had to rely on a late goal to beat Burray Boomerangs. Boomerangs also played well coming back from 2-0 down to draw level before Predators edged the match.

St Andrews Hurricanes also continued their unbeaten record winning all their three games to move into joint second place with the Flyers. In the top match of the night Hurricanes enjoyed a comfortable 4-0 victory over Real Dounby.

It was also a good night for Glaitness United and Inter Dounby who both won the three games they played.

At the other end of the league Papdale Vikings enjoyed their best victory of the season a 5-1 victory over Glaitness Rovers. Firth Spiders were unlucky not to pick up a victory in an exciting match with Glaitness Spurs, a late equaliser securing a draw for Spurs.

 Week 8 - 11th December 2010

The Primary Indoor football league has now reached the halfway point and it is looking like a 3 horse race between Papdale Flyers, St Andrews Hurricanes and Stenness Falcons.

With the Hurricanes having a week off both Flyers and Falcons took full advantage each comfortably winning their three games on Saturday night – Falcons have now moved up into second place one point behind the Flyers.

Early league pace setters Stromness Predators suffered a blow to their chances of finishing in the top three when they were beaten 2-0 by Real Dounby in the top match of the night. The Dounby team deserved this victory in a match in which they played very well.

It was also a good night for two of the other Papdale teams with both Kings and Dales winning the three games they played on the night. Dales victories included a very good 2-1 win against Real Dounby.

In the closest games of the evening the points were shared between Glaitness Spurs and Burray Boomerangs, and between Evie and Stromness Devils, both games ending 1-1. In the latter game Devils took an early lead and looked like they might hang on as a combination of missed Evie chances and good saves by their keeper kept them ahead. Evie eventually made the breakthrough late in the game to secure the draw.

At the bottom of the league Glaitness Rovers enjoyed their second victory of the season. In an end to end game a single goal gave them a narrow victory against Firth Spiders and allowed them to leapfrog the Firth side in the league.

Week 7 - 4th December 2010

With the Primary Indoor football league nearing the halfway stage its neck and neck at the top with only one point separating the top three teams, each having played 19 matches.

Papdale Flyers and St Andrews Hurricanes have identical records and share the lead on 73 points, both teams winning all their matches comfortably on Saturday night. Flyers did get an early fright in their first match against Glaitness United when the Glaitness team took an early lead, this being the first goal Flyers have conceded this season.

Only one point behind are Stenness Falcons who also won all their games. It was a good night for the Falcons despite also being shocked when falling behind to an early goal in their first match against schoolmates Pumas. They came through two very difficult games on the night beating last weeks second placed team Stromness Predators and also coming through a hard game with Papdale Kings when a single goal earned them victory in a match in which they were pushed all the way. In the top match of the night against Predators, Falcons went into an early lead but it took a string of good saves by their goalkeeper to prevent a Stromness equaliser. Having survived the pressure Falcons scored a second and topped it of with a fine third goal to secure an excellent 3-0 victory.

Following this defeat Predators have now dropped to fourth position 4 points behind Falcons.

The only other team to have a perfect night were Real Dounby who won all three of their matches.

There were a number of very competitive matches in the bottom half of the league with goalless draws between Orphir Torpedos and St Andrews Dynamos and between Pumas and Papdale Vikings. In the latter game Vikings were denied victory when the Pumas goalkeeper saved a retaken penalty kick. It was also a close match between Glaitness Rovers and Stromness Devils with Rovers being denied victory when they hit the crossbar in the last second of the match.

Week 6 - Friday 26th November

There are new leaders at the top of the Primary Indoor Football league after the latest set of fixtures played at Picky on Friday night. Papdale Flyers have taken over at the top and now hold a narrow one point lead over Stromness Predators who had a week off.

In the top match of the night Flyers were held to a goalless draw by St Andrews Hurricanes. Whilst Flyers had the greater share of posession neither team were able to make a decisive breakthrough. Both teams will however be pleased to have retained their unbeaten records.

With Hurricanes and Flyers dropping their first points of the season Stenness Falcons took full advantage winning all their three games to move up into fourth position one point behind the Hurricanes.

One of the best performances of the night came from Firth Scorpions who held Papdale Kings to a 2-2 draw in an exciting match. In other close matches Burray Boomerangs came back from 2-0 down to earn a draw against Glaitness Rovers and another exciting game saw a similar scoreline between Glaitness Spurs and Hope Hotspurs. There were good saves from both goalkeepers as Papdale Vikings drew with St Andrews Dynamos and a late goal secured a victory for Papdale Mighty Marvels against Boomerangs.

The biggest cheer of the night was reserved for Firth Spiders who managed what Flyers had failed to do earlier in the evening - score a goal against the Hurricanes.

  Week 5 - Saturday 20th November

Despite losing only their second match this season Stromness Predators continue to lead the Indoor League after the fifth week of fixtures played at Picky. Their defeat came in the top match of the night in which they were narrowly beaten by a single goal by St Andrews Hurricanes. In an exciting match which neither team deserved to lose there was plenty of end to end play with some fine saves by both keepers. Whilst Predators had the bulk of the chances and can count themselves unlucky not to have taken anything from the match it was Hurricanes who scored the decisive only goal of the game.

The Hurricanes followed up with two further hard fought narrow victories against Papdale Kings and Glaitness United to maintain their perfect start to the season.

Papdale Flyers have also won all their games so far winning all their three games on Saturday by 5-0 margins to move into second place in the league. Three victories for Stenness Falcons have moved them into a top five position.

In the closest games of the night there were last gasp winners for Papdale Vikings in their match with schoolmates Mighty Marvels, and for Evie against Orphir Torpedos. Evie also scored a last second equaliser in the only drawn game of the evening against Firth Scorpions.

Having their best week of the season so far were Inter Dounby (3 wins); Scorpions and Evie (2 wins and a draw) and Torpedos (2 wins). Well done to Stromness Devils who won their first game of the league against Firth Spiders. With the loudest vocal support of the evening encouraging them on it was also a notable week for Stenness Pumas as they scored their first league goal in the match against Scorpions.

After such a good start to the league it was a disappointing week for Real Dounby who had to forfeit all their four games as illness amongst the players meant they were unable to raise a team. Amongst the teams benefiting were Spiders with the four point awarded to them allowing them to move off the bottom of the table.

Week 4 - Saturday 13th November

Both the leading teams - Stromness Predators and Real Dounby dropped their first points of the season as the fourth week of fixtures were completed at Picky on Saturday night.

In the top match of the night Predators lost by a single goal to Papdale Flyers in a keen tightly fought affair. A fine save by the Flyers keeper prevented the Predators from securing a draw.

Real also tasted defeat when they lost 3-0 to Stenness Falcons - a good victory for the Stenness side. They were also held to a draw by Papdale Kings in a tight match with a draw being a fair result.

With the top teams slipping up, Papdale Dales who won all four of their games took advantage to move into second place in the league.

Also moving up the league are Flyers and St Andrews Hurricanes who are now the only two teams with perfect 100% records having played fewer games than the leaders.

There were a number of tight games played on the evening with Evie securing a very creditable draw against Kings, and Torpedos scoring a last second goal to secure a 2-2 draw against Hope Hotspurs.

Papdale Vikings registered their first points of the season to move off the bottom of the league.

Week 3 - Saturday 6th November

Stromness Predators and Real Dounby continued their impressive starts to the season as the third week of fixtures were completed at Picky. Predators lead the league by 4 points having played one more game than Real.

Whilst Real cruised to victories in their three games Predators had to work hard to beat Inter Dounby by a single goal. Inter played well with their goalkeeper saving a Stromness penalty.

St Andrews Hurricanes were the other team taking maximum points on Saturday. In the top game of the evening Hurricanes narrowly edged out Stenness Falcons when a late goal secured then victory in a tense keenly fought affair.

The Glaitness derby between United and Spurs was the most exciting game of the night. United took an early 2 goal lead but great credit to Spurs who produced an excellent comeback to level the match and indeed were unlucky not to secure victory when they created a number of late chances.

In other tight games the matches between St Andrews Dynamos and Orphir Torpedos and Hope Hotspurs and Burray Boomerangs ended goalless. The latter game between the two local rivals was another exciting affair with Hotspurs hitting the crossbar and Boomerangs having a goal disallowed but neither side was able to edge the match.

Despite missing a penalty Dynamos secured their first victory of the season with a narrow 1-0 victory over Stenness Pumas.

Week 2 - Saturday 30th October

Four teams - St Andrews Dynamos, Orphir Torpedos, Stenness Falcons and Stenness Pumas played their first games of the 2010/11 season as the second week of fixtures were completed at Picky on Saturday evening.

Stromness Predators have opened up a narrow four point lead at the top of the league having won all seven games they have played. They were given their sternest test so far by Dynamos and had to rely on a late goal for a narrow 2-1 victory.

They are followed closely by Papdale Flyers and Real Dounby each having played one game less but also with 100% records. In the top match of the evening the Flyers beat their schoolmates Kings in a Papdale derby by 2-0. Real had a good victory against Glaitness United.

Only two other teams have won all their games - St Andrews Hurricanes who were not playing this week and Falcons who won all their opening three games.

In the closest game of the night Torpedos drew 1-1 with Stromness Devils with both teams hitting the woodwork in a game that either team could have won. The Devils were also involved in a tight game with Pumas - although there was plenty of effort from both sides neither could break the deadlock and the game ended goaless.

Also picking up their first wins of the competition were Burray Boomerangs, Glaitness Rovers, Papdale Mighty Marvels and Orphir Torpedos.

A pleasing aspect of this years competition is that there are higher numbers of girls participating than in previous years with teams such as Glaitness Spurs playing with three girls - hopefully they will continue to play and move onto the senior Orkney ladies football team in future years.

Week 1 - Saturday 23rd October

Saturday saw the OYDG Primary Indoor League commence, once again very generously sponsored by the S. & J.D. Robertson Group Ltd.

St Andrews Hurricanes made an impressive start in their bid to retain the league and secure the title for a third consecutive year. With three 5-0 victories they are early pace-setters and will be a difficult team to beat over the course of the season. Five other teams made a perfect start winning all their three games - Papdale teams - Dales, Flyers and Kings, as well as Real Dounby and Stromness Predators.

With many players making their debuts there were a number of one-sided games as younger players found it hard playing against more experienced opponents. Nevertheless it was encouraging to see so many talented new young players playing for the first time - the future of football in Orkney looks bright.

Pick of the games on the opening night was the United v Inter match where Inter came back from 2-0 down to score an equalising goal in the dying seconds. Kings also had to battle hard to secure a narrow 2-1 victory over Scorpions.
