BIRD WATCHING

by TOM O'CONNOR - 09:37 on 20 October 2011
The walk around the Loch and coast at Holm was finally acheived today 19th Oct with eleven members braving the weather which stayed dry for the time we were out away from shelter. The loch was productive as usual with Wigeon, Mallard and some Gadwall also the resident mute swans, Heron's, and out to sea watching young gannets diving, Merganser,s getting to know each other Longtail ducks and the turnstones all were worth a stop to enjoy. The next outing will be on the 16th Nov with a trip to Scapa but more news on this later.

The Birdie Group enjoyed a very successful morning on Wednesday 16th, led by David & Liz, had an adventurous outing, fist catching a bus, all 19 of us, then along Catty Maggie's Loan, down a bridleway off the Airport road to Scapa Pier, a distance of about 3.5 miles . Over 30 different species of birds were sighted, too numerous to name them all, but the specials were 2 Little Auk's at Scapa Pier, rare in Orkney from the high Arctic, a flock of golden Plover, then some greenfinches near Crantit Dairy . Everyone enjoyed some tasty soup and sandwiches provided by Liz & David with a very big thank you from all the group.
December outing will be on the 14th meeting at the old PowerBowl carpark 1000Hrs.

Many thanks to everyone (11) who turned up to day Wed 14th to brave the weather which was not bad for December, to have a stroll around the Peerie Sea and see so many species of ducks and birds in a small area, all told we saw 14 which was not bad for the time of year. Then rounded off with a relaxing warm up with our coffee and nibbles in the Picky centre for a chat.
I will get the 2012 programme sent out to everyone in good time prior to our next meeting on the 18th Jan which will be in Stromness. In the mean time wish you all a Happy Christmas and good birdie watching for the New Year.
Ken
