u3a Walking Group - Marwick to Birsay - Monday, 13 July, 2026
by Ellie Wiltshire - 11:01 on 14 July 2026
The walk planned for Monday 6th July was postponed because of heavy rain and rescheduled for today, the 13th. Twelve of us met at Marwick on an ideal walking day, with bright clear skies, sunshine, and a very gentle breeze. We began with a short walk along the shore before climbing up to the Kitchener Monument. A few eagle-eyed birdwatchers in the group spotted puffins and terns. A brief stop at the top to catch our breath and admire the views, we could see clearly across to Westray.
The route continued downhill along the coastal path to Birsay, where we met two local group members who had chosen a shorter walk. After stopping at the Palace for a snack and drink, we set off on the final coastal section to the Geo. Along the way, our botanists pointed out bush vetch, with its lovely blue-purple flowers, while the birdwatchers again spotted black guillemots and razorbills. After the usual mandatory photo at the Geo, we reached the end of the walk, where cars had already been left for our return to Marwick. We finished with a cuppa and cake before heading off.
It was a super day, with excellent weather and good company. In total, we walked six miles.
