The committee of Orkney U3A met today in Dounby. Amongst the items discussed were
1. The success of the Regional Meeting held here on the 19th June .
We wish to try and foster links with our neighbouring U3As in the North of Scotland. Hilary will be supplying a list of the activities undertaken by these U3As along with contact details for their Secretaries . There are a number of crossover interests and I would hope that everyone, and especially Group Leaders, will study them and see if contact can be made with a Group in the south, or one like it . I am already planning on taking my photographic group across the Firth for a couple of days next year to photograph different places and meet up with and get advice as to where to go to get the best photos, from one of the neighbouring U3As.
I notice there are Groups immediately south interested in Archaeology, Craft, Music and Music Appreciation, Family History, Play Reading, Walking and Bird Walking as well as Photography.
2 Ragnhald Ljasland, ( Kim Gee's Daughter in Law ) has written giving details of Summer Courses run by the UHI in Kirkwall. Next year, rather than have fixed Courses, they are going to tailor make courses to suit groups of individuals. This maybe something that individual U3A groups and their leaders might want to pursue to further their appreciation of aspects of their interests. They seem to be run for anything from a half day to a full week .
3. Kate Barrett, our Publicity Secretary, is going to produce Coloured posters (A4 Size ) to advertise our activities. She will be putting them in various prominent places in Kirkwall and John O'Shea will do the same in Stromness. If you feel you can help spread the word too, please contact Kate and she will pass on posters for you too.
4. Tea and Biscuits. Donations were asked for people having tea and biscuits at the General Meetings but the level of Donations is way below the amount of tea being drunk!
From now on, £1.00 will be the charge for having tea and biscuits at General Meetings.(this applies to coffee too!)
5. Susan Kingston, who is leaving Orkney sadly, has resigned as leader of the Music Appreciation Group. Many thanks to her for all her efforts over the past few years and Good luck and Good Listening in your new home . Thank you also to Angela Way who has agreed to lake over the leadership of this group.
The next committee meeting will be on Tuesday 7th October at 2 pm in Dounby.
Have a great Summer,
Tim
