Music Appreciation Group
by Angela - 21:11 on 05 April 2016
The U3A music group met on Monday the 4th of April-and our theme was " Russia and or Russians"-
Here follows some of the items we listened to--as one can imagine Russian choirs were well represented-and Tchaikovsky-plus some lovely music that was new to some of us-also composers we had never heard of-though the music was beautiful--
From a C.D. called St.Petersburgh Classics-we listened to Song of the Cherubim by Dimitri Bortnianskywho was Ukranian-
The Flight of the Bumblebee by Rimski Korsakov-
Another composer new to us was Lyadov-The Enchanted Lake-
We must have listened to half a dozen pieces by Tchkovsky-some new -some very familiar-The
music we select has to be short-or an excerpt-in order that we can all have a couple of turns of playing our choice-
Then we had some Rachmaninov ,Shostakovich,Stravinsky,Prokofiev, and some Schuman played by Horovitz.
As usual-We all heard something new and learned a few things about the composers and their music-
Our next meeting is on the 2nd May-and the theme will be Opera and Operettas 1860-----1960.
