Walking Group One 25th April 2024

Five hardy souls collected today at Happy Valley for the first Hill Walk of the year .The temperature was cool with a North Easterly wind blowing and a hint of rain on arrival.

Off we set heading towards Russadale Quarry, spotting a Buzzard on the way.Turning into the footpath we remained sheltered from the wind all the way to the top of the hill.

The sun was out at the Quarry and a Greenshank was feeding at the edge of the Lochan. Then it was up the Peat road to the summit with spectacular views across Stenness and Harray Lochs, plus a view of the Closed Road beyond the Watch Stone. On the other side we looked over the Flow and down towards the Oil Platform and South Ronaldsay

Then it was back down after a stop for a snack and finally a walk around Happy Valley itself. The Daffodils planted by James and others were looking lovely and the Bluebells are days away from opening. Then it was on to a well deserved lunch at the Pier Cafe, having walked 4 miles and gone up 800 feet (and down again )

The next walk will be on Friday 24th May and hopefully more hills and views.

Keep moving.

U3A Walking Group - 18th March 2022

by Tim Wright - 16:24 on 18 March 2022

Seven of us set off in dry but breezy weather to walk the Covenanter's Memorial Walk. The sun came out occasionally and the path was wet in places.

We perused the information board at the Memorial and then walked along the cliff to the graves of the poor unfortunate victims. Echo's of Man's inhumanity to Man still reverberate today with the Ukraine Invasion. We successfully negotiated the steep steps without mishap. Coming up the final steps we spotted a Hen Harrier looking for it's lunch ahead of us. Then up past East Denwick which used to be only accessible by walking or tractor many years ago. It reminded the leader, more than 40 years ago, of taking a patient from there to hospital in the middle of the night on the back of a flat bed trailer. Now there is a proper hard track down and electricity at the house to boot. After that it was a return to the cars along another aged track. A thoroughly good walk, talk and exercise enjoyed by all the participants.

The next walk will be Thursday 28th April. It's a bit of a long wait but the AGM is Thursday 21st April and I am away the week before that.

Keep moving, Tim.
