Music Appreciation Group One – January 2023

Members of Music Appreciation Group One met on Monday, January 9 th , for a morning celebrating
the music of Russian composer. As always, a very enjoyable two hours ensued, with the following
music being played:
Glinka/Balakirev – ‘The Lark’ (Kassia);
Scriabin - Daniil Trifonov, playing ‘Etude, Op.42 No 5’ from the Yellow Lounge;
Georgy Sviridov – ‘Snowstorm’ (‘The Blizzard’), IV. ‘Romance’;
Borodin: ‘Steppes of Central Asia’ – Vladimir Ashkenazy;
Rachmaninov: Evgeny Kissin, playing ‘Piano Concerto No 2 in C minor’, Op. 18: ‘Allegro
scherzando’ - BBC Proms 2000, Andrew Davis, BBC Symphony Orchestra;
Stravinsky: ‘Pulcinella / Rattle’, Berliner Philharmoniker;
Glazunov: ‘Elégie in G minor, Op 44’ – Yuko Inoue and Kathron Sturrock;
Schnittke: ‘Suite in the Old Style’, played by Daniel Hope and Alexey Bodvinov;
Glinka: ‘Viola Sonata II, Larghetto’ – Duo Sabbah-Reyes (Marc Sabbah, viola – Elaine
Reyes, piano);
Stravinsky: ‘The Rite of Spring’/ LSO, conducted by Simon Rattle;
Borodin: ‘Quartet No 2 in D major for Strings’, III. Notturno’ – Chamber Music Society
of Lincoln Center;
and three pieces by Tchaikovsky:

Yuri Revich, playing the ‘Russian Dance from Swan Lake’ – live from the
Montenegrin National Theatre’s 2019 New Year’s Concert;
‘6 Romances, Op.6’ – ‘None but the Lonely Heart’ – Placido Domingo and Itzhak Perlman
‘Serenade for Strings’: Concertgebouw Kamerorkest

The next meeting will be on Monday, February 6 th , and the theme chosen is French Music.
