Walking Group One 25th April 2024

Five hardy souls collected today at Happy Valley for the first Hill Walk of the year .The temperature was cool with a North Easterly wind blowing and a hint of rain on arrival.

Off we set heading towards Russadale Quarry, spotting a Buzzard on the way.Turning into the footpath we remained sheltered from the wind all the way to the top of the hill.

The sun was out at the Quarry and a Greenshank was feeding at the edge of the Lochan. Then it was up the Peat road to the summit with spectacular views across Stenness and Harray Lochs, plus a view of the Closed Road beyond the Watch Stone. On the other side we looked over the Flow and down towards the Oil Platform and South Ronaldsay

Then it was back down after a stop for a snack and finally a walk around Happy Valley itself. The Daffodils planted by James and others were looking lovely and the Bluebells are days away from opening. Then it was on to a well deserved lunch at the Pier Cafe, having walked 4 miles and gone up 800 feet (and down again )

The next walk will be on Friday 24th May and hopefully more hills and views.

Keep moving.

u3a Photography Group One - February 2024

by Tim Wright - 18:38 on 28 February 2024

Fourteen of us met in St Margaret's Hope with a rather undecided weather forecast . In the event it was mostly dry with a couple of small showers but dull and not very warm .It was about what one would expect in Orkney in late Feb so in no way daunted we set off to look for Tom's 10 listed items . Some of the clues were a bit cryptic. Where on earth was Davy Crockett's Hat  ? Was there a particular odd Chimney Pot among the profusion available ? Who was going to be out Hula Hooping on such a cold day ? In the event all the items were revealed. Some were easy like the cracks in the wall and the triangular drain covers . Birds in windows and coloured Bulbs proved more taxing while there were plenty of upturned boats .However which anchor was the one intended or would any of them do ? Was the old trading post also the Old Post Office or was that hidden elsewhere ? All these things await the compilation . There were other items to be taken too like the dog in the window , the Whale Bone Heart in the Marengo Garden plus the Calls to the Lord in the Cromarty Square . I am sure we will see others before the next meeting . After nearly 2 hours we met at the Sands hotel for lunch and hot drinks .A very satisfied group of photographers then left for home after an excellent day out .Many thanks to Tom for his compilation of interesting subjects for photographers to pursue . It enlivened the trip no end .

The next meeting will be Wednesday March 27th .We plan to go to The Palace at Birsay but probably will not have a crib list of what to look for .Details nearer the time and as usual it will be weather dependent .

Photos from today to me by Sunday 24th March for the compilation .Please email a max of 5 only of your best photos  on the subjects Tom suggested or others if you feel  they are more interesting  but no more than 5 .

This month's project is "Streets/ Roads ". Please send 5 max on that subject to David by Sunday 24th March too.
