u3a Photography Group - Rousay - 16 April 2025

Nine of us set off on a slightly unpromising morning to Rousay. The wind was northerly and the sky was cloudy. It was not a day for being on deck. However as we arrived the sun did too. We set off in two cars with the first stop a walk up to Yarso Cairn. It is about half a mile up the hill so is often the one not visited but with the sun out the views were excellent over to Costa and Gurness Broch. We found Violets out and the Gorse was spectacular in the sun and blue sky. Next was another hike down to Mid Howe Broch and Cairn. They had put protective barriers in the Broch which is an annoying feature of many Historic Scotland sites these days. However with care they could be cut out of the pictures. Sheep and lambs were down on the rocks in front of the Broch but they weren't the North Ronaldsay breed. Back by the car park we found a sheltered spot on the grass field for lunch and terrific views of Eynhallow and the developing tidal Roost. Then it was over the hill to the north to Saviskaill Beach. There is an interesting set of ruined farm buildings there with a Mill plus Seals hauled out on the rocks. The cloud had set in and there was a chill in the air. Further up the road we stopped off at the sculpture before passing the road up to the Boardwalk view site taken earlier by our colleagues. The view was wonderful from there over to Egilsay. We met up again at the Ferry where we learned that the other car had been to the Hotel for coffee. Soon it will be open for meals but we made do instead with lovely cakes made by the members . So a great day out in Rousay and with the Rousay Walks leaflet a place to be visited again. However I must practice my car backing skills more or be subject of more ribbing by the passengers watching from the sidelines.
The next meeting will be May 14th. I will try and get a trip to HMS Tern sorted.
The project this month is "Makes Me Smile". Closing date Monday 12th May.
I am still looking for Gurness /Aikerness submissions by this Monday. David is looking for "New Life" submissions for the same date.
Also please pay your subscriptions too as if not paid by June you will be removed form the email list.
