u3a Music Appreciation Group 1 - 23 February, 2026
by Glenys Alsop - 14:20 on 12 March 2026
Music Appreciation Group One held its first meeting of the new year on Monday, February 23rd. Members met, as usual, in Glenys’s house at 10.30 for a very enjoyable two hours of music (followed by coffee and cake).
The February meeting continued where it had left off at the end of 2025 with the theme of Composers beginning with the letter ‘H’ (and could have chosen to continue with this theme, there being so many composers whose names begin with ‘H’!). While there were choices that were well known, the joy of having access to YouTube is that one is able to find wonderful pieces of music that are completely new to members.
Movements of compositions by the following composers were played:
Hahn: The brilliant Renée Fleming singing L’Heure exquise, from 7 Chansons grises;
Handel: Music for the Royal Fireworks (The English Concert)
Haydn: Lute Sonata a 3 in F Major (Allegro), (Jacob Lindberg)
“ Cellokonzert D-Dur [wonderful playing by Steven Isserlis]
Hasse: Angela Hicks singing L’augeletto, in lacci stretto;
Hindemith: Sinfonische Metamorphosen (Frankfurt SO)
Hoffmeister: Viola Concerto (Antoine Tamestit)
Holst (Adrian): Winter Idyll (Ulster Orchestra)
Holst (Imogen): Suite for Unaccompanied Viola (Violeta Vicci)
Howell: Piano Concerto in D minor (Valentina Seferinova)
Hummel: Trumpet Concerto in E-flat major (Robert Frear)
“ Grand Concerto in F major for bassoon and orchestra (Valeria Curti)
And
Henry VIII: Pastime with good company (The King’s Singers)
The next meeting will be on the last Monday in March (23rd), where the theme will be Composers or compositions beginning with the letter ‘I’ (not quite so easy, I suspect!)
