u3a Photography Group - Eday - 27 May, 2026

by Tim Wright - 11:20 on 28 May 2026

Ten of us met at the pier in Kirkwall on a beautiful sunny morning for a trip to Eday . Standing out on deck we passed three Cruise Liners of various sizes in Kirkwall Bay . No whales were seen but quite a few birds were about .Arriving in Eday we made our way to the Eday Museum and Heritage Centre .It has many details of the island including it's own "Whisky  Galore " moment from 1924 ,preceding the "Politician" wreck by decades .. Then it was up to the bird hide at Mill Loch for a picnic lunch on the bench there .Following this we walked to the Stone of Setter ,a very large Standing Stone ,and then on to the Vinquoy Hill Chambered Cairn .Two brave souls  went in a fairly narrow entrance on hand and knees to find a dry interior with 3 side chambers . Walking back we passed the ruins of two more Stalled Cairns that had been excavated in the 1980s.

Then we made our way to the Submarine where Mike gave us a conducted tour . He had served as a Submariner and in his retirement has bought up redundant submarine hard wear and created the interior of a submarine down to the red lights used when diving . Dozens of dials and controls were a photographer's delight as was the faux Torpedo Tubes . We then went around his garden admiring his model castles , houses and a miniature Lighthouse .Leaving there we met up with the rest of the party at the picnic bench by London Airport , the "Third London Airport  " , which sits on the Bay of London . Finally we went back at the ferry and the long trip home via Stronsay . A great day excursion enhanced by wonderful weather through out .

The next meeting will be on Wednesday 24 th June .We hope to go to the Tomb of the Eagles .

The Project for this month is "Reflections " . Five photos to David on that theme by Monday 22nd June and five photos to me from the Eday Trip on the same date .
