u3a Walking Group - Coastal walk from Skaill Bay - 19 June, 2026

by Ellie Wiltshire - 08:09 on 25 June 2026

On Friday, James led a walk north of Skaill bay. The weather forecast was very wet, which almost led to the walk being cancelled, and may have deterred a few, but four of us gathered at St Peter's Kirk, Skaill. There were patches of blue sky, and no rain, and we stayed dry for the whole walk. The first section was the coast path towards Marwick. We enjoyed great views of the sea and spectacular rock formations. After a couple of miles, we turned inland along a track over a rather misty hill to the Marwick Road, and then to Cruaday Quarry, where we stopped for lunch. The quarry is interesting for its sloping sandstone pavements, plants such as stonecrop, and its fish fossils. From there we walked to Quoyloo, along a track to Netherstove, and back to the Kirk, about 6 miles in all.

Date of next meeting:

Ellie will be leading the next walk on Monday 6th July, details to be sent nearer the date
