u3a Walking Group - Skaill beach to the Broch of Borwick - 23 July, 2026

by Ellie Wiltshire - 17:23 on 27 July 2026

Marion organised and led the walk on the Thursday 23 July, when six of us met on a grey, dull morning, at Skaill Beach car park for a walk to the Broch of Borwick. Just as we were ready to leave, heavy rain began, but undeterred, we set off. The weather soon improved and the sun came out. We began along Skaill Beach, then climbed the bank at the far end to join the coastal path. The route took us past the Hole o’ Row, a natural arch, and  Yettna Geo to the cairn, where we paused to admire the view and striking rock formations. We then continued gradually downhill, passing Ramna Geo before stopping at the Broch for lunch, which proved an ideal spot. We returned on a slightly higher path, where the eagle-eyed birdwatchers pointed out a pair of Arctic skuas, along with guillemots and razorbills. It was a super 5.5-mile walk.

Many thanks to Marion for organising the leading the walk.

Dates of Future Walks

Ellie will be leading a walk on Monday 10 August

Brian will be leading a walk on Friday 21 August
