South Ronaldsay Coastal Walk
by Admin - 13:39 on 25 July 2013
On Sunday 21st July, four Field Club members set off to walk from Burwick to Sandwick along the west coast of South Ronaldsay, to see whether this would make a good place for a future field meeting. The answer was a resounding ‘yes’.
Apart from the stunning coastal scenery, we enjoyed seeing a variety of seabirds, including tysties, puffins, gannets and many fulmars with chicks on the cliffs, as well as a few swifts overhead; we saw hundreds of Common Blue butterflies, some hoverflies, found Fragrant Orchids, good areas of the delightful little Sheep's Bit Scabious (which only grows in very few places in Orkney), some patches of native roses in flower; we enjoyed the many angelica plants from which the flowers were just bursting and a wonderful mix of colourful wildflowers and grasses.
This is an excellent walk, with much of interest to see along the way and we certainly hope to hold a meeting here in the future.
