Bog Snorkelling?
by Admin - 08:41 on 30 July 2013
It’s maybe a little ironic that our planned Bog Day event on Sunday had to be cancelled as it was too wet!
However, it didn't stop 3 intrepid "explorers" going out snorkelling instead. ( We were going to get wet anyway.)
We had heard that the West coast had been invaded by swarms of thousands of Salps . These are tunicates which can be seen singly or form long strings , both of which were evident in very large numbers. Also present were several hydromedusae and true jellies which feed on the salps. Aequorea are "crystal jellies" ... nearly clear or pinkish in colour , they shine in the sunlight. Several Lions mane and Blue Lions mane jellyfish were also present . They were an amazing spectacle ... photos can be seen on the Snorkel Orkney Facebook page .
