A Fungi Foray in Finstown on a Sunny September Sunday
by Admin - 10:09 on 03 October 2013
On a lovely sunny Sunday September afternoon, 17 folk came out to enjoy an excellent ‘Fungi Foray’ in Finstown. Julian Branscombe was our able and enthusiastic leader and took us initially into the Finstown cemetery. Here we found several types of waxcaps, including the lovely Pink Waxcap.
Hiding in a corner was a small group of Wood Blewitts and there were numerous patches of Smoky Spindles as well as an assortment of other fungi.
Tearing ourselves away from these delights, we headed off into Binscarth Woods to see what could be found in a very different habitat. It seemed that there were fruiting fungi everywhere – under trees, in leaf litter, on living bark and on dead wood. This provided us with a huge range of species from the tiny blue/green Elf Caps, to the delicate white Porcelain fungi, to the huge Dryads Saddle, part of which had fallen to the woodland floor.
All in all, it was a very enjoyable afternoon and Julian left with a box of fungi to identify further. We will add a link to the species list here, as soon as it has been compiled.
