A Hunt for Damsels and Dragons

by Admin - 21:15 on 06 July 2014

As the weather forecast was good, Dick called a last minute search for Damselflies and Dragonflies on Saturday 5th July. A small but enthusiastic team set off firstly to the quarry pool at Russadale. We passed a beautiful array of wildflowers along the way and Penny spotted a couple of moonwort plants by the quarry to add to those we had seen recently in Finstown.

The St John's Wort were looking particularly stunning. The sun was, however, staying behind the clouds and we failed to find any damsels.

We then decided to move on to the Stromness reservoir where the sun came out and we found a number of blue-tailed damselflies in various stages.

Graeme had more luck (and sun) at Russadale a bit later in the day - see his blog at http://odo-meter.blogspot.co.uk/2014/07/stop-clock.html

Dick reports that he later spotted a large red damselfly in a patch of open water at the Stromness Loons.
