The Orkney Field Club Virtual Bioblitz is back on Saturday 26th June - join us!
From 12 noon on Saturday 26th June until 12 noon on Sunday 27th June OFC will be holding our second virtual Bioblitz. A Bioblitz is a 24 hour wildlife survey, normally carried out on a single site, with the aim of identifying and recording as many species as possible. Last year, amidst tight Covid restrictions, we held a very enjoyable virtual Bioblitz focussing on everyone’s own gardens. This year, with a bit more freedom, we’re hoping you can join us by taking on your own local ‘patch’, either alone or in the company of friends and family.
You don’t need to be an expert at all, as we’ll have a team of local experts on hand via our Facebook group OrkneyBioblitz2021 to help identify any species you are finding tricky - it could be flowers, birds, insects, or anything! You can also join in by sharing your list of species seen or images using Twitter hashtag #orkneybioblitz2021.
The idea of a Bioblitz is to really take the time to look closely at one area and so to create as many wildlife records as possible, which can then be used by conservation organisations to help them in their work. We will make sure all the records go to the Orkney Wildlife Information and Records Centre (OWIRC). Click below for instructions on how to take part.
Recording forms - an Excel spreadsheet for digital submissions and PDF for those who prefer to submit by post can be found here, or email jenny@jtlarch.co.uk to get them emailed direct to you.
We’d like as many people as possible to take part! It doesn’t matter how many or few species you see, or can identify, there’s sure to be something through the day that can be added. And please get your family, children and friends joining in too!
If you have any questions regarding the event please email orkneybioblitz@gmail.com
Thank you, and happy Bioblitzing!
