Moar brothers claim league doubles

The league doubles. Brian Moar and Stevie Moar came from 3-1 down to beat Paul Foubister and Michael Muir 5-3 in the final.

The Legion played host to this year's League Doubles cup last Friday evening, and it was another great night of darts. Dating back to the formative years of the KDDL, the League Doubles was first contested in 1968 and it has remained one of the most prestigious trophies in the local darts calendar, despite no longer being a ranking event.

The draw randomly pitched most of the 'B' league couples into the top half of the draw, but that did not necessarily mean Sanday teammates Paul Foubister and Michael Muir would have an easy run to the final. Indeed both pairings of Jamie Drever and Gary Wilson or George Low and Erlend Lennie could have taken their place had they been more successful when it came to finishing.

The bottom half of the draw was laden with potential winners. Defending champs Ian and Stevie Linklater came through to the semi-final unscathed, but were made to work for it by two determined pairings from the 'B' league. Meeting them in the semi were Brian and Stevie Moar who had to overcome the Firth family duo of Derek and Paul, before surviving match darts from firm favourites Kevin Gray and Wayne Monkman. In the battle of the brothers it would normally be expected that the Linklaters would pull through, but missed doubles allowed the Moars in and clinical finishing led to an unlikley 4-0 win, and a final which would be made up entirely from the Sanday league team.

The elder statesmen made their case first, with lethal finishing putting Paul and Michael 2-0 up, punishing missed opportunities from the brothers. The Moar boys were by now starting to find their range, with Stevie nailing a 180 to help pull a leg back before Paul and Michael restored their two leg advantage, but that was as good as it would get for them. The Firth parish pair were hitting the treble with regularity and a 180 from Brian saw them swing the scores around to lead 4-3. The next leg was to be more of the same, with trebles raining in from the Moars as Brian left Stevie a shot at double tops with Michael and Paul some way behind, which he dispatched with his first dart to claim the trophy.

Next Friday is a big one for the 'B' league players as the 'B' League singles takes place in the Masonic. It is the last of this years 'B' ranking competitions, but points from the main League Singles will still be added to the total so the 'B' county team will remain undecided until then.

180s were scored by: Bruce Moar, Keith Brumpton, Alan Findlay, Alan Gray, Ian Linklater, Nicol Gray, Ryan Tulloch, Toby Penwarden, Alistair Rendall, Hamish Baillie, Erlend Lennie, Brian Moar, Stevie Moar, Stevie Linklater (two), Kevin Gray (two), Stuart Thomson (two), Robbie Stanger (two) and Paul Foubister (two).

High Finishes came from: Michael Muir 101, Stevie Moar 103, Gary Wilson 110, Brett Dickinson 112, Pete Mathieson 120, David Mowat 125, Nicol Gray 152, Kevin Gray (101, 109), Brian Moar (101, 109) and Robbie Stanger (130, 130).
