Only 36 players turned up for the League Singles, which was a bit disappointing, as it was the last of the ranking points events, but all the top players were entered, along with eight B League players, and only one of them got into the second round.

By the quarter-final stage, it was the usual faces present. Defending champion, Stevie, going or his tenth title, was still there, but was to exit at the semi-final stage. Going on to the final were Kevin Gray and Paul Foubister, both of the Legion team. It looked as if it was going to be a quick final, as Kevin raced into a 2-0 lead, Paul came back to win the next three, and only requiring one more leg.

Steady darts from Kevin made it 3-0 and in the deciding leg, Paul got off to
a good start with a 140 and that was to win him the leg and game at 4-3, He
joins the elite club of players who have won both the West Mainland and
Kirkwall singles titles. Paul also won the prize for the highest finish on
152. Overall there were 14 180s scored, including three in a row of opening
legs from Robbie Stanger  in total he scored five.

It is down to three now in the Williamson’s A League, as the Commodore
lost their game 9-3 to the Wanderers who are the only team who can prevent
either the Legion or Untouchables from winning the A League, and that
would be a big ask, as they trail second-placed Untouchables by 12 points
and it is half-way through the second half. The Legion whitewashed Wanderers
B 12-nil for the second time this season. The win puts them further ahead
of the Untouchables on games difference, after the Untouchables beat
Untouchable A 10-2. so, it could be all down to next week¹s meeting
between the two. RBL2 got their first point of the season in a 6-6 draw with
Quoyburray B, but it is unlikely to save them from the drop. Meadowbank
had a good 7-5 win at the Golf Club.

The top two teams in the Williamson’s B League both has good wins. The
Fanooks remain in top place, with a 10-2 defeat of fourth-placed Shore 2,
and Sanday beat Deerness 8-4 to stay two points off the top and the top two
meet this week. The Sands are still in third place, after a 8-4 win over
Tankerness and they came from 4-1 down to do it. Tankerness also lost their
postponed game 7-5 to the Murray Arms who also drew 6-6 with Sands 2, No
score from The Shore.

It was a record-breaking week for 180s scored, with a total of 31 from Mike
Bain, Paul Foubister, Brian Murray, Brian Stevenson, Keith Brumpton, Derek
Ward snr, Derek Sutherland, Michael Muir snr, Peter Mathieson, Glen Miller,
Eddie Craigie, Thorfinn Eunson and two from Derek Firth, Kevin Gray, Ian
Wilkie, David Kirkpatrick, three from Stevie Linklater and Brian Moar and,
of course, five from Robbie Stanger.

There were high checkouts of 100 from Graham Reid, 103 from Wilfie and Ryan
Tulloch and Robert Gatt and Martin Peace,104 from Michael Moodie, 105 from
Brian Stevenson, Ivan Leslie had a 124 and 108 and a 122 in a 12-darter, 115
from Peter Mathieson, 129 from Willie Laird and 156 from Keith Brumpton. In
the singles there was 105 from Martin Peace, 108 from Willie Bremner, 114
from Ian Wilkie, 117 from Kevin Gray, 144 from Robbie Stanger and 152 from
Paul Foubister.

This Saturday will see the third Kirkwall Open Singles, which carries a
prize fund of £1.080, with the winner picking up £500. It will be held in
the Masonic Club, with names in by 1.30pm. Remember there is prize money
down to the quarter-final stage and also on offer is £100 to the to lady and
registered B player. It is understood that some 20 players from south, and
maybe some Shetlanders will attend. The top prize in the raffle is a signed
shirt from Phil Taylor, plus a Celtic dart board.
