Another great entry of 43 players made their way out to the Commodore for the second round of the Qualifying Open Singles. Some of the top players were missing as they were on their way to Fraserburgh for the RBL Scottish Finals.
Thirteen non-registered players took part, including two young ladies, but only one made it into the quarter-finals and he was a young player from Rousay called Jamie Marwick, and he is one to watch for the future.
But, by semi-final time, it was well kent faces who took to the oche, withKevin Gray beating Ian Linklater 3-1 and in the other one, Mike Bain playedvery well to take out Martin Peace 3-0, as Martin had been on fire allnight, taking out the singles champion Paul on the way to the semi-final,but ran out of steam.In the final, Kevin ran out a 3-0 winner and both Kevin and Mike will join
Stevie and Brian at Pickaquoy in August to play the professionals.
There were 180s from Leigh Shearer, Mike Bain, Craig Taylor and Kevin Gray. There were high checkouts of 100 from Craig and a 111 from Juicy. There may have been more, but that is all that was reported to the secretary.
So, it is on to the second last qualifier which will take place this Saturday night in the Masonic Club. Please note that it is on Saturday and not Friday. Then it is on to the last one which will be held in Stromness Golf Club on Friday, June 10, with names in by 7.30pm. Telephone entries

What a result in Fraserburgh, where the Legion teem of Stevie Linklater, Robbie Stanger, Bruce Moar and Alan Gray who are the Northern Area RBL champions were playing in the RBL Scottish Championships, winning the team event. Stevie is now the RBL Scottish Singles Champion and it was nearly a hat-trick, as Robbie and Bruce lost in the final of the doubles. It is the second time that the Kirkwall Royal British Legion team has won the team cup, but it is the first singles title for a member of the Kirkwall team and it is 22 years since the doubles was won. So, well done everyone.
