The weather delayed Gilmour Shield was well worth the wait as both the glorious weather and closely fought competition made for an excellent day of primary football at the KGS football pitches on Saturday 22 August. It was fitting that the two best sides made it to the final and no surprise that the teams could not be separated after extra time as the final score between Glaitness A and St Andrews Hurricanes ended 1-1.

In a tight first half chances were limited and there was no score at half time. Midway through the second half Aidan Foubister opened the scoring for Glaitness with a fine shot.  It didn’t take Hurricanes to equalise when Thorfinn Scott latched onto an excellent through ball to nick in front of the Glaitness keeper to even up the match. Although both teams had chances to score a winner the match ended 1-1 and with no further scoring in extra time it was on to penalties to decide the winners.

Neither team deserved to lose but in the end it was goalkeeper Findley Cooper who was the St Andrews hero as he saved 3 out of 4 Glaitness penalties as Hurricanes won the penalty shoot out 3-1. At the end of the competition OYDG Chairman Stephen Crawford thanked the referees and both teams on producing a very good final. He then introduced sponsor Bob Gilmour who presented the winners and runners up medals and the Gilmour Shield to Hurricanes. This was St Andrews first victory in the competition since 2008. Week 3 - Saturday 7th March

A large and noisy crowd congregated at Picky on Saturday for the final night of primary indoor football action. The premier cup competition, the TSB Trophy was contested for by the eight top teams with league champions Glaitness United going for the league and cup double for the second year in a row.

It was fitting that the two top teams this season made it through to the final. With the league matches between the two teams resulting in a 1-0 victory for United and a 1-1 draw this was always going to be a close match, but it looked from the start as if Hurricanes were more fired up for the final match. Nairn Hall opened the scoring for Hurricanes and added a second with a cracking drive near the end of the match to secure a deserved victory for the St Andrews side, and end United’s hopes of completing the double.

Reid Crescent Shield

The remaining 14 league and 7 non-league teams battled it out for the Reid Crescent Shield in what is usually a difficult to predict competition. This year was no different and the whole competition was tightly contested with a number of matches only being decided by extra time and penalty kicks.  

Particularly memorable was the shoot out between Papdale Dales and Glaitness Rovers in the semi final which resulted in a 10-9 spot kick victory for Rovers after a marathon 27 penalties had been taken. In the end it was double success for St Andrews as the Twisters scored a late winner to edge out Glaitness Rovers 1-0 in a closely contested final.  This was a good effort by a young Rovers team who did very well to reach the final and were unlucky to just lose out to the older Twisters side.

This is the first time that St Andrews have won both primary cup competitions and reflects the strength in depth of young footballing talent present in the this part of Orkney.

East v West Challenge Matches

Honours were shared in the tradional East v West clashes. West came out on top in the A game with a 1-0 victory to win the S R Paterson Shield with East winning the B game 3-0 to win the Johnny Johnston Plate. A fun encounter played this year for the first time between the East and West coaches saw West win 5-1 to ensure bragging rights go to the West Mainland.

The presentation of trophies and medals took place at the conclusion of the evening’s play with OYDG Chairman Stephen Crawford commenting that this was one of the best atmospheres he had ever experienced on a final night.  He thanked the schools, coaches, sponsors and referees who had all contributed to another excellent winter of indoor football. Trophies and medals were presented on behalf of the various sponsors by Margo Macpherson, Devo Macpherson and Brian Budge.

The evening also saw the Primary Indoor Player of the Year being announced and there was success for Stromness when Predators player Owen Young won the award from a shortlist that included Aidan Foubister (Glaitness), Nairn Hall (St Andrews), Cameron Foy (Papdale) and Dylan Cormack (Dounby).

Week 2 - 28th February

Week 2 of the qualifying competition for the TSB Trophy and Reid Crescent Shield took place at the Picky on Saturday.  As has come to be expected with this competition, the night threw up a lot of close fought encounters and more than few surprise results.

The seeded teams from both groups made it through to the cup competition but Papdale Kings managed to pinch first place in their group from their fellow school rivals Papdale Flyers by a single goal on goal difference, both teams having finished on 22 points and having drawn their own game 0-0.

Group 3 was topped by Real Dounby who played exceptionally well to take maximum points.  Second in Group 3 was Firth Scorpions who won three of their matches by a single goal before finishing with a flourish to win their final game against Papdale Mighty Marvels by three goals. 

Other particularly noteworthy performances came from Glaitness Rovers and Atletico Dounby, while a young St Andrews Cyclones side won three of their matches including a thrilling single goal win against Papdale Dales.

Week 1 - 21 February

There was plenty of excitement as the first two qualifying groups in the TSB Trophy were played at Picky on Saturday night. The main surprise was in Group 2 where seeded Hope/Burray Hotspurs failed to qualify for the quarter finals and as a result drop out of this year’s cup competitions.

Whilst Group 1 went to form with both seeded teams Glaitness United and Stromness Predators progressing, Predators were pushed all the way by Orphir Torpedos and in the end only went through as a result of a better goal difference after both teams ended up level on points.

A goalless draw against Glaitness Spurs was to cost HB Hotspurs dearly in Group 2 and Evie took full advantage to ease into second place behind St Andrews Hurricanes and qualify for the quarter finals.

The teams appearing for the first time – Stromness Strikers, Glaitness Pirates, Papdale Knights and AC Dounby, all performed admirably with the young Dounby side enjoying two victories.

2014/15 PRIMARY INDOOR LEAGUE

Final Week - 14th February

It was a glory night for Glaitness United and Firth Scorpions as the Primary Indoor League reached its conclusion in front of a large and noisy crowd at Picky on Saturday night. Many pulses were racing on a dramatic Valentine’s night showdown which started with five teams in with a chance of winning the two main prizes. In the end United and Scorpions held their nerves with the Glaitness team winning the league for the second year in a row and Firth recording their first Shore Shield success in 15 years.

With three matches involving the top three sides it was always going to be an exciting evening and it was Hurricanes who struck the first blow as they ended Papdale Flyers title challenge. A 1-0 victory was a narrow but deserved victory for Hurricanes in a match in which they had the majority of possession and the bulk of the chances.  

United then faced Hurricanes in a match where victory for either side would have put them in pole position. In a tense but exciting match there was nothing to choose between the teams. Hurricanes started the match on top and opened the scoring but United came back into the match scoring an equaliser and finishing the stronger side as the match ended 1-1, a fair result.

With Hurricanes and United both winning their other two games United went into their final match against Papdale Flyers knowing that nothing less than a victory would guarantee them the league title. United struck early and late in the match with two excellent finishes by Aidan Foubister to secure a deserved victory much to the delight of players and supporters alike.

Runners Up, St Andrews Hurricanes

The Shore Shield for the smaller primary schools also went to the wire. With Firth Scorpions facing a tough set of fixtures on the final night Hope/Burray Hotspurs knew that they had to win all their fixtures to keep the pressure on. With Scorpions only winning one of their final matches they had to thank Real Dounby for holding Hotspurs 1-1, otherwise both teams would have ended level on points. For Scorpions a first victory in this competition for 15 years and for both teams an excellent season in which they both also achieved a top five league finish.

Stephen Crawford, OYDG Chairman introduced the presentation ceremony at the end of the night. He thanked all those that had contributed to such a successful competition - Picky management and staff, fixtures organisers, referees, timekeepers, scorers, teams, coaches, parents and supporters. He particularly thanked the large crowd who had provided so much vocal encouragement to the young players over the course of the competition. He congratulated the winning teams, and introduced Fiona Bain representing the sponsors who presented the trophies and medals to the winners and runners-up.

Week 14 - 7th February

With all the top teams still to play each other it is going to be a dramatic final night of fixtures this Saturday as the Primary Indoor League reaches one of its most exciting conclusions for a number of years.  Last Saturday saw the three league contenders winning all their matches resulting in Glaitness Utd holding a narrow single point lead over St Andrews Hurricanes with Papdale Flyers a further four points behind.  It took United a while to open the scoring in their match against Papdale Dales as they won 2-0 but the top three never looked in any particular difficulties as they matched each other to maintain their championship hopes.

Elsewhere Firth Scorpions maintained their lead over Hope/Burray Hotspurs in the Shore Shield as both teams also won their matches.  Whilst Hotspurs came through their matches with little difficulty Scorpions seemed to be feeling the pressure as they recorded three narrow 1-0 victories. They were especially lucky in their final match when only a couple of good saves by their keeper stopped the young Glaitness Rovers from taking something from the match. Although Scorpions lead over Hotspurs is 12 points its not over yet as Scorpions face a much tougher set of fixtures on the final night.

Week 13 - 31st January

With 2 weeks of fixtures left in the Primary indoor season the league is set up for a dramatic conclusion with a number of key matches still left to be played on the final night. On Saturday night Glaitness United edged back to the top, a single point ahead of St Andrews Hurricanes with both teams having now played 37 games.  The top teams - United, Hurricanes and Flyers all won their matches with Hurricanes being involved in the tightest struggle as they overcame Papdale Kings by a single goal.

Firth Scorpions won all their matches in hand over Hope/Burray Hotspurs to take a commanding 12 point lead over their rivals in the Shore Shield who had a night off. However it was not plain sailing for Scorpions who had to work extremely hard to secure narrow victories over Evie and Orphir Torpedos

Top eight sides Real Dounby and Stromness Predators also had a good night with Real Dounby winning their 4 matches and Predators 3 matches including an exciting 3-2 victory over Glaitness Spurs. 

Towards the bottom of the league Athletico Dounby enjoyed their best night of the season winning three matches and the bottom two shared the spoils as the peedie Firth Spiders held Stenness/Orphir in an exciting game that produced no goals.

Week 12 - 24th January

With the top three teams continuing their winning ways it's as you were at the top of the Primary Indoor Football League with St Andrews Hurricanes maintaining their narrow lead over Glaitness United. Week 12 proved to be very exciting with many close matches and nearly every game going the full distance. It was not all plain sailing for the top sides and reigning champions Glaitness United were made to work very hard for their last minute single goal win against a talented and determined Hope/Burray Hotspurs.

In the Shore Shield for the smaller schools Firth Scorpions faltered slightly only picking up a single point in a goalless draw against St Andrews Dynamos and Hope/Burray Hotspurs took full advantage winning four of their five matches. As a result Hotspurs have moved ahead of Scorpions although the Firth side have valuable games in hand.

It was also a good night for Glaitness Spurs who won all three of their matches against higher placed teams and Athletico Dounby who also picked up points against teams above them in the league.

Week 11 - 17th January

Four victories on Saturday night saw St Andrews Hurricanes move back to the top of the Primary League on another night full of excitement for the large crowd at Picky. It was not plain sailing for United however as Hope/Burray looked like they might hold the St Andrews side to a draw before two late goals secured a vital win for Hurricanes.

In second place three points behind are Glaitness United who have a game in hand on the leaders. There was plenty of tension in the air as United faced up to Kirkwall rivals Papdale Flyers in a key match between two of the leading contenders for the league. United took an early lead in the match and despite both teams creating a number of half chances in a hectic end to end match there was no further scoring as United secured a very important victory.

Firth Scorpions continued their excellent season securing a further three victories as they piled the pressure on Hope/Burray Hotspurs in the race for the Shore Shield. This included a narrow 1-0 victory in a closely fought match with Real Dounby. Hope/Burray Hotspurs are still in the race however and they played very well on the night. They had an excellent 5-0 victory over Papdale Kings and were extremely unlucky not to take anything from their match against Papdale Flyers. In a cracking match Flyers had to thank their keeper for a series of good saves which helped them to a narrow 2-1 win.

It was also a good night for Stromness Predators who picked up maximum points and Glaitness Rovers who secured results against higher placed Evie and Papdale Vikings.

Week 10 - 10th January

There was plenty of drama at the top and bottom of the Primary Indoor Football League as the competition resumed at Picky on Saturday after the Xmas break. After two weeks of inactivity there was plenty of energy on show as all the teams started the New Year at a high tempo, resulting in some very close matches.

Glaitness United have now taken over the top spot but only by a single point from Papdale Flyers and St Andrews Hurricanes who share second place. All the top three sides have all now played 27 matches and a very exciting close to the season is guaranteed with 5 weeks of fixtures left to be played. With the leading clubs winning all their matches it took a dramatic last second winner against Real Dounby to establish top spot for United. This was tough luck on a Dounby side which played very well and probably deserved a share of the points. As competition at the top is so tight, this could prove to be a significant victory for United.

With Hope/Burray being stranded on the wrong side of the Barriers due to weather conditions and not able to play their matches, Firth Scorpions took full advantage in the race for the Shore Shield. The Finstown team are having an excellent season and won all three of their matches on Saturday including a hard fought victory against Orphir Torpedos to move up into fourth place.

At the bottom of the league there was plenty of vocal encouragement for Firth Spiders and Stenness/Orphir as they faced each other looking for their first victory. In an exciting end to end match it was Stenness/Orphir who scored the winning goal after Spiders had levelled the match at 1-1. This completed a tremendous night for Stenness/Orphir who had earlier secured a fine 1-1 draw against Glaitness Spurs to move off bottom position.

Other notable performances on the night included Papdale Mighty Marvels and Papdale Vikings securing draws against higher placed schoolmates Papdale Kings.

Week 9 - 20th December

With leaders St Andrews Hurricanes having a week off the chasing pack in the Primary Indoor league took full advantage during Saturday night’s matches. With Glaitness United and Papdale Flyers winning all their matches convincingly Hurricanes lead at the top has been reduced to just 3 points over United with Flyers a further point behind.

The leading contenders in the Shore Shield, Firth Scorpions and Hope/Burray Hotspurs faced up in a crunch match. It was Scorpions who scored the only goal of the match to secure a key victory in a keenly contested match, although Hotspurs can count themselves unlucky hitting the post towards the end of the match. Scorpions secured a further two victories and now lie a single point behind Hotspurs with games in hand.

It was also a good night for Papdale Kings and Real Dounby who won all their matches.

There was also plenty of excitement at the bottom of the league as Stenness/Orphir picked up their first point of the season when they held Stromness Devils to a goalless draw. Indeed Stenness/Orphir could consider themselves unlucky not to have taken anything from their opening match against St Andrews Cyclones where they took the lead before eventually losing 2-1.

The league now takes a two week break before resuming on Saturday 10th January.

Week 8 - 13th December

Two of the remaining unbeaten records in the Primary Indoor league disappeared on Saturday night as the only other unbeaten side Glaitness United beat rivals Firth Scorpions 3-0 and followed this up with a narrow 1-0 win over leaders St Andrews Hurricanes to inflict both side’s first defeats of the season. In the eagerly anticipated match between Hurricanes and United there was little to choose between the sides with the winning Glaitness goal coming via an unfortunate own goal by Hurricanes which left their keeper stranded.

As well as United it was also a good night for fellow title chasers Papdale Flyers who picked up ground on the leaders with three victories.

With Firth Scorpions facing their hardest matches so far and dropping points against United and Hurricanes, Hope/Burray Hotspurs took full advantage winning all their matches to regain the lead in the race for the Shore Shield.  

Also picking up full points were Evie and enjoying their best week were Glaitness Rovers with 2 victories and a draw.

With the league now reaching its halfway stage it looks like the race for the title will go to the wire with Hurricanes, United and Flyers being the leading contenders in what could be one of the tightest contests in a number of years.

Week 7 - 6th December

St Andrews Hurricanes have extended their lead at the top of the league to 18 points after last Saturday’s fixtures played at Picky. They won all three of their matches but the chasing pack have games in hand over the leaders and there was also maximum points for Glaitness United and Papdale Flyers who kept up the pressure at the top.

Despite dropping points in a 1-1 draw with Papdale Kings, Stromness Predators have moved into second place. The match between Predators and Kings was one of the most exciting matches of the night with Predators scoring a free kick equaliser late in the game.

Firth Scorpions continued their excellent unbeaten start to the league and have edged 3 points ahead of Hope/Burray Hotspurs in the Shore Shield for the smaller primary schools. This was despite being held to a draw by Papdale Dales. Hotspurs had a difficult week with matches against top sides Hurricanes and United but they kept up the pressure coming back from a goal down to score a last second winner in a crucial match against Evie.

Inter Dounby enjoy their best week of the season with two victories against Stenness/Orphir and St Andrews Cyclones. The full results from Saturday were as follows:-

Week 6 - 29th November

A classic encounter between St Andrews Hurricanes and Stromness Predators lit up the Primary Indoor League on Saturday night. The league leaders were stunned as Predators raced into a 2-0 lead but they gradually clawed their way back into the match to draw level. Just on the final whistle Hurricanes scored a third goal to complete a wonderful comeback and deny the Stromness side a share of the points. This was a game neither side deserved to lose and Predators can consider themselves unlucky to have not taken anything from the match but credit to Hurricanes for their spirited fightback. A further two wins saw Hurricanes extend their lead to 16 points.

With Papdale Flyers having a week off fellow chasers Papdale Kings and Glaitness United took full advantage winning all their matches to move up the league with Kings now sharing second place with Predators.

 In the race for the Shore Shield Hope/Burray Hotspurs and Firth Scorpions are matching each other stride for stride with both teams again winning all their matches. Scorpions faced the stiffest test on the night overcoming Evie by a single goal in a 3-2 victory.

It was also a good night for Papdale Vikings who enjoyed their best week so far with three victories and Athletico Dounby who doubled their points tally with a win and a draw.

Week 5 - 22nd November

With second placed Glaitness United having a week off the league leaders St Andrews Hurricanes took full advantage winning all of their matches on Saturday night to extend their lead at the top of the Primary Indoor League to 8 points.  Hurricanes left it late in their match against Real Dounby scoring the only goal in the dying seconds to record a crucial victory.

Papdale Flyers who also won their 3 matches have moved into second place having played one game fewer than Hurricanes. Flyers were also pushed all the way in their opening match against Hope/Burray Hotspurs with Hotspurs unlucky not to secure a share of the points when they hit the Flyers post early in the match.

Firth Scorpions have made an excellent start to the league and they maintained their unbeaten start to keep up the pressure on Hope/Burray Hotspurs in the race for Shore Shield. On Saturday they beat two of the top five teams – Stromness Predators and Papdale Kings – to establish themselves as genuine contenders for silverware this season.

Some of the tightest matches took place between the lower placed teams with matches between Stromness Devils and Firth Spiders and St Andrews Cyclones and Athletico Dounby ending goalless despite all four teams giving it their all.  Spiders however were delighted to have secured their first point of the season, and there was further joy for Athletico when they secured their first victory with a 1-0 win over Spiders in their final match of the night.

Week 4 - 15 November

St Andrews Hurricanes are the new leaders of the Primary Indoor Football League after the latest set of fixtures played at Picky on Saturday night. In a top of the table clash Hurricanes narrowly edged out the previous leaders Papdale Flyers 1-0 in an exciting match played at a very high tempo. Having also won their other three matches on the night they take over the top spot and lead second placed Glaitness United by 7 points having played a game more.

As well as Hurricanes and United three other teams won all their matches on Saturday – Papdale Kings, Stromness Predators and Hope/Burray Hotspurs.

The smaller schools are putting in some excellent performances as they compete for the Shore Shield. With Evie having a week off Hope/Burray Hotspurs piled on the pressure winning all their matches although it was a close call in their match against St Andrews Dynamos where they scored a late winner after being a goal down. They are being pressed all the way by Firth Scorpions who maintained their fine unbeaten start to the season with some excellent performances on Saturday. In their opening match they came back from 2-0 and 3-2 down in their match against Real Dounby to collect a share of the points. They saved their best performance for their match against Papdale Flyers, holding the previous league leaders to a 1-1 draw. This was a match of two set pieces with a Flyers penalty being cancelled out by an excellent free kick equaliser for Scorpions.

Finally, well done to Inter Dounby and crowd favourites peedie St Andrews Cyclones who won their first matches of the season.

Week 3 - 8 November

Six teams – Papdale Flyers, St Andrews Hurricanes, St Andrews Dynamos, Papdale Kings, Stromness Predators and Firth Scorpions all scored maximum points on the third week of the Primary Indoor League played at Picky on Saturday night. As a result Papdale Flyers top the league by two points from St Andrews Hurricanes with St Andrews Dynamos a further two points behind in third place.

There were a number of exciting matches on the night. Title contenders Glaitness United dropped vital points as Papdale Vikings produced a superb comeback from 2-0 down to salvage a well earned share of the points. A score draw was also a fair result in an end to end match between Glaitness Rovers and Papdale Mighty Marvels which finished 1-1. It was a tale of two penalties in the match between Athletico Dounby and Glaitness Spurs. Whilst Spurs scored their spot kick the Dounby penalty was saved by the Spurs keeper in the last second of the match to deny Athletico a draw.

In the Shore Shield it was Ophir Torpedos who picked up the points in a key match against Hope/Burray Hotspurs. This was nn excellent 2-0 victory for Torpedos in a match in which Hotspurs failed to take any of their many chances.

Finally it was a good night for Glaitness Rovers who enjoyed their first victory of the season with a 1-0 win over St Andrews Cyclones.

Week 2 - 1 November

Only three teams remain with a 100% record after the second week of fixtures played at Picky on Saturday evening. The early pace setters are Papdale Flyers and Real Dounby each with six wins from six matches. Firth Scorpions have also won all three of their opening matches.

It was also a good night for Glaitness United and St Andrews Dynamos who won all three of their matches with Dynamos winner in the first match of the night against Twisters coming with the last kick of the game.

There were some very close and exciting matches on the night including Dales v Twisters and Kings v Hurricanes with both matches ending all square at 1-1.

Enjoying their first wins of the season were Papdale Dales, Papdale Mighty Marvels and Stromness Devils.

Hope/Burray Hotspurs are the early leaders in Shore Shield by a single point from Evie. Hotspurs put in some fine performances on Saturday earning a good draw against Stromness Predators and an excellent 1-0 victory against Papdale Kings.

The biggest cheers of the night were reserved for the young Papdale Cyclones who produced a superb comeback from 3-1 down to draw level with Orphir Torpedos in one of the most exciting matches of the night. They were to be denied a share of the spoils however when Torpedos scored a late winner.

Week 1 - 25 October

A large and noisy crowd greeted the teams and provided an excellent atmosphere in the Picky Arena on Saturday afternoon as the Primary Indoor League kicked off. Now into its 27th year of completion the 22 teams face 15 weeks of matches as they aim to be crowned primary school football champions.

Off to a flying start in this year’s league are two of the Glaitness teams – United and Spurs. United are one of the favourites for the league title and they opened in style winning all four of their opening matches with a third Glaitness side Rovers proving to be their toughest opponents. Rovers put up a strong defensive performance with United winning by the only goal of the game. Glaitness Spurs were equally impressive on the opening night securing four clear victories to join United as the early pacesetters.

Also starting with a perfect record were Papdale Flyers, Papdale Kings and St Andrews Dynamos who played and won their first 3 games.

Of the smaller primary school teams the best start has been made by Hope/Burray Hotspurs who secured two victories and a score draw.

At this early stage of the season, it looks like this year’s competition will be just as enjoyable for all the teams and supporters as in previous years.
