As the competitive part of the KDDL season starts drawing to a close, two of the main 'B' league trophies were won this past week.

The 'B' league singles took place in the Masonic on Friday evening, attracting 27 entrants. It was encouraging to hear how keen some of the younger players were, trying to work out how many points they would need to make the top 12 in the 'B' rankings in order to be selected for the 'B' intercounty match in May, which is the main reason this ranking system was introduced.

Fresh from a couple of very hot performances in the league earlier in the week, Ryan Tulloch was in great form as he registered a 13 darter against Ray Butcher before taking out Albyn Singles champ Brian Moar in the quarters. He was met by defending 'B' singles champ Josh Alexander, who took advantage of some slack play from Ryan to progress to the final.

Two of the elder statesmen of the lower tier met in the other semi-final, with Keith Brumpton losing out to Andy Green, who had been hitting tons for fun all evening.

Josh started the more positively of the two, taking the first before Andy sneaked back into it with the second. Unfortunately for Andy, he ran out of steam at this point, and as he faltered Josh just seemed to grow in confidence, taking out consecutive 17 dart legs to retain the title.

A resounding win over East Mainland Young Farmers Club in the Sands on Tuesday night saw the Wanderers claim the 'B' league title. Meanwhile both Sands and Toonies played two matches that night, including one between themselves which Sands narrowly won. Another convincing win against Bilco Boys saw Sands leapfrog them into second place in the table. Any of the four teams in the chase for the two remaining promotion places (Sands, Bilco Boys, Quoyburray and the Toonies) can still make it. The only thing that is guaranteed is that it will go down to the final week of fixtures.

The 'A' league looks all but over as the Exiles made it a miserly three points from their last four matches as they could only draw with the Legion, allowing the Untouchables to pull three points clear at the top with their win over Tankerness, with a game in hand.

This weekend sees the biggest prize in Orkney darts up for grabs as the Kirkwall Open, sponsored by J.W Gray and Tennents, takes place on Saturday afternoon. Now in its 15th year, the trophy and £500 first prize has never gone to a winner from outside Orkney. Will this be the year that trend is broken?

There is also a money in – money out singles competition taking place on Friday evening prior to the main event.

180s were scored by: Jamie Marwick, Kevin Gray, Leigh Shearer, Davy Henderson, Wayne Small, Glen Foubister, Lee Rendall, Michael Montgomery, Aaron Mitchell, Ray Butcher, Ross MacPherson, Alan Gray, Trevor Shearer, Bruce Moar, Kevin Peace, Billy Ward, Jim Brown, Toby Penwarden, Robbie Scott, Stevie Garner (two), Graham Firth (two), Erland Ritch (three), Alan Findlay (three), Keith Brumpton (three), Josh Alexander (four), Jamie Drever (four), Robbie Stanger (four) and Ryan Tulloch (six).
