Exiles won the Spiers Cup.
With the team cups coming thick and fast at this early stage of the season, it was time for the first of the cups for all leagues combined, the Spiers Cup, to take place in the Legion. The longer format called for a straight knockout, and it was the Exiles who emerged victorious, beating the Orkney Golf Club 4-2 in the final.
The Legion was again the place to be for the first singles competition of the season, the much sought after Jimmy Miller memorial open singles, which attracted a healthy 37 participants. It may not have the incentive of carrying ranking points, or the longstanding prestige of events such as the League doubles, but for many KDDL players, this is one of the main cups to win in a season because of the local legend it is named after.
There were some high quality darts on show, but by semi-final time it was one of Jimmy's best friends, Alan Gray, who found himself facing Brian Moar in the top half of the draw, but unfortunately that was as far as he would proceed. Young Ross MacPherson was once again excelling under the spotlight of singles competition, but he missed chances to win as he just lost out to Jimmy's grandson Steven Low.
The onlooking crowd were beginning to wonder if a fairytale ending was going to happen, with Steven, who rarely plays darts other than the odd parish cup excursion each year, about to win his grandad's cup. Brian however had other ideas and was in a party pooper mood as he scored heavily (apart from his score of 3!) and finished well to quickly win out by four legs to nil. Jimmy's son Eoin Miller thanked the KDDL once again for hosting the trophy and for all those who took part, before presenting the coveted trophy to the winner.
