The Orkney Championships play-offs between the Kirkwall champions and the
West Mainland champions took place at the weekend, with the K-DDL winner,
the Legion, overwhelming Stenness, the West Mainland winners to the tune of
11-1.
It was a devastating display from the Legion 5-1 up after the first half,
they went one better by winning the second half 6-nil. So, at 11-1, it is
the biggest win by either of the champions.
But the West did have something to celebrate, as Davy Cooper, the West
singles champion, just pipped Paul Foubister, the East singles champion,
3-2. A good game, but not a patch on the doubles play-offs, as Derek and
Kevin, the Kirkwall champions, completely out-gunned Dennis and Keith, the
West Champions 3-0.
It was a terrific display of darts from the Kirkwall players. Kevin Gray
scored four 180s to bring his total for the season to 29. Lenny Clouston
also got one 180 and Jimmy Miller had a 110 finish, with Paul Irvine hitting
a 102 finish.
Both the Williamson's Leagues are now over, with the Legion winning the A
League by six points and remaining undefeated after a final 9-3 win over the
Golf Club. The Wanderers took third spot after beating Wanderers B 8-4,
and they finish second bottom. RBL2 finished without a win, but did take a
point in a 6-6 draw with Quoyburray. Up into fifth spot went Meadowbank with
a 10-2 defeat of Quoyburray B. The Commodore and Untouchables A finished
all square at 6-6.
In the Williamson’s B League, Sanday remained undefeated after
whitewashing Tankerness 12-0 and took the title by four points at the first
time of asking. Fanooks ended up in second place after a 10-2 win over the
Shore who were a player short. Shore 2 took third spot in their first year
in the league after a 7-5 win over Murray Arms who had to settle for fifth
place. And at the Sands, both teams settled for a 6-all draw, but the point
couldn’t prevent Sands 2 from taking the wooden spoon. The Likely Lads
finished on a high with a 9-3 win over the Bilco Boys.
There were 180s from Ross Donaldson, Paddy Kirkpatrick, Aaron Mitchell, Lee
MacPherson, Mike Bain, Hamish Baillie, John Thomson, Gary Brown and Michael
Muir jnr. That brings the total 180s scored to a record 385 for the season.
There were high checkouts of 106 from G. Rendall (Sands), 107 from Andrew
Rendall and S. Gray, 110 from Neil Croy, 111 from Brian Murray, 130 from Lee
MacPherson and 135 from Robert Gatt. The total for the season was 289. Top
of the OA¹ League was Ross Donaldson with 167, and top of the B League was
Trevor Shearer with 151. Those with the most high finishes were Ian Wilkie
and Ivan Leslie, both with 13.
