Kevin and Shona win memorial doubles

The entry for the Steven Flett Memorial Shield was up on last weeks one, with 18 pairs, but well down on last year, which is a pity, at it is a charity event and great fun.

It is surprising that so many of the top players did not take part, with only four of the team who played Shetland being present. it was great to see two pairs from Westray entered. The holders, Stevie and Catherine showed that they had no intention of giving up their crown as they stormed into the semi-finals, but that was as far as they got, as Kevin and Shona Gray pipped them for a place in the final. In the other semi-final, it was an all-Westray event, with Simon and
Michelle Parry going one better than last year, making the final and I am sure we are going to see Jim and Lorna Brown again sometime. The final proved to be a disaster for the Westray couple as power play from Kevin, with a little help from Shona powered them to a 3-0 scoreline.

Maybe there will be a better turnout on Friday night, for the Tattie Bogle Mixed Charity Doubles. It is names in by 7.45pm and it is out of a hat, so players do not have to enter as a pair. There will also be a raffle.

But, that is not the end of the darts as far as K-DDL is holding four qualifying Open Singles to get eight players to play the professionals when they come up in August. The first one is on Friday, May 20, in the Royal British Legion Club. It is a change from the original venue which was the Masonic Club, where it will be played on Saturday, June 4. The other venues are the Commodore on May 27 and the final game in Stromness Golf Club on Friday, June 10. The top two players in each venue will qualify. Remember, this is an open tournament, so any player in Orkney can play. Just turn up on the night.

Registration books for the new season are very slow. They are now ready for collection from the secretary Jim Scollie.

The darts world in Orkney was shocked to learn about the untimely passing of Davy Cooper who played for Stenness last season and was the Orkney Singles champion. Everyone liked Davy, and he never changed, win or lose he was always cheerful. He will be missed. K-DDL sends its condolences to his family.
