Final qualifer on Friday

A very poor turnout of only 33 players entered for the third and second last of the qualifying rounds to find players to take the stage at Pickaquoy on August 20 to face the professionals.

If the 13 non-registered players including two ladies are deducted, only a sixth of the Kirkwall registered players took part, but it didn't detract from the quality of play as there were some terrific games, especially in The later stages.

By quarter-final time, it was six home-based players and two West Mainland players who toed the oche, but only one made it into the semi-final. It was Keith Chalmers who went down 3-0 to Ivan Leslie. In the other semi-final, James Flett played very good darts to beat Willie Bremner 3-1.

The final was a bit of an anti-climax, as both players, with nothing to play for, struggled to find any form, but Ivan came back from behind twice to win 3-2 and they will both join the other four qualifiers.

There were 180s from Ross Donaldson, Leigh Shearer, Alan Gray, Keith Brumpton, Craig Taylor, Keith Chalmers and two from Ivan Leslie. There were high finishes of 103 from Kevin Critchlow, 114 from Ivan Leslie, 130 from Dennis Watt and a 145 from Bruce Moar.

It is now on to last chance saloon on Friday, in the Stromness Golf Club. Names to be in by 7.30pm. Will there be a West Mainland qualifier, or will the Kirkwall players invade Stromness? Only time will tell. A service bus leaves Kirkwall Travel Centre at 6.35pm, and earlier at 5.45pm, or telephone your entry in before 7.30pm. Remember, this is your last chance.
Registration books are now available from the secretary Tattie Bogle.
