Another great crowd, this time for the Legion Men’s Doubles.
There were thirty-six players, making 18 pairs and, once again, lots of young players, but also most of the top players, all fighting for the two places to make the Legion team to defend their Northern Area title in Forres, in February. By semi-final time, it was very familiar faces who faced each other. Getting into the final were Kevin Gray and Derek Firth and Brian Moar and Martin Peace.
It was Brian and Martin who won 4-2 in a very good final, and will join Kevin and Ivan in Forres. Good luck to them.
The Kirkwall League continues on Monday, 23, with the Henderson Cup.
It’s the old Royal Cup and it’s for ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams of four to six players and will be held in the Legion Club. Names by 7.30 p.m.
The Henderson Cup is not the only one next week, as on Friday it’s the E. R. & T. Craigie Singles, out in Quoyburray, and it’s also a ranking points event for registered players only.
With lots of players still in the running for a place in the team for Shetland in April, it’s sure to be a big entry.
Carling are the main sponsors of the Kirkwall Open, being held on Saturday, March 10, in the Masonic Club. Names by 2.30 p.m. and it is £500 to the winner, plus the trophy, and lots of other prizes.
It’s open to any player over 18.
Both leagues get underway on Monday, January 30.
