East do the double over the West

Two great results from the annual East v West games, held up in Stromness. The ‘A’ boys won 11-7 to extend their winning run to 32-7.

Even with three reserves in the team, East were too strong for the West boys, but they had to fight for it, with the score 3-3 after the doubles. Then the East won six singles in a row, leaving them only two from victory. The West came back to make it 9-7, before wins from Paddy and Roy gave the East team the overall victory.

The East ‘B’ team went all-out to avenge last year’s defeat to the West in a game expected to be very close. With the score 2-2 after the doubles, it looked like it could be, but that was all the West were to win, as the East boys won all eight singles to win 10-2 — the biggest margin in the 17 years it has been played. The overall score was 11-6 to the East.

There were notable scores in the ‘A’ game; Kevin Gray and Billy Ward had two 180s, with Michael Bain hitting one and in the 'B' game Billy Eunson and Brett Dickenson had one each. Ryan Tulloch had a 113 finish, but top of the shop goes to Keith Bain, with checkouts of 120, 130 and 154.

In the Williamson’s ‘A’ League, the Legion’s game against the Untouchables was postponed for some reason, but the Untouchables did get their postponed game against RBLM played, and they won 7-5. It doesn’t take them up the league, but they are now level with RBLM.

The Golf Club only need one point to secure the runners-up spot, after a 8-4 defeat of Sanday. The Commodores also won 8-4, against Quoyburray ‘B’, but only have one game to play, and they trail the Golf Club by two points. Other results saw the Wanderers win 8-4 over Meadowbank. No score in from the Quoyburray v Untouchables ‘A’ game.

All these postponed games must be played by next week, which sees the end of the league season.

Congratulations to the Murray Arms, who have won promotion to the ‘A’ League, after beating Shapinsay 7-5, and leaves the Williamson’s ‘B’ League wide open. Shapinsay stay on top after winning a postponed game against the Sands, 8-4.

The fight for the wooden spoon still goes on after defeats for the Shore 9-3, against Shore ‘2’, and the Sands ‘2’ also lost 7-5 to Tankerness. The Bilco Boys are also down there, after losing to the Likely Lads 7-5, but should be clear with only two games to go. No score for Deerness v Nomads.

There were 180s from Graham Rendall, George Low, Thorfinn Eunson, Brian Murray, Gordon Rendall, Keith Brumpton, Bruce Moar, Michael Moodie, Derek Ward Snr, and two from Ian Wilkie and Billy Ward.

High checkouts: 100 from Stevie Linklater and Wayne Monkman; 101 Derek Manson; 110 Billy Ward and Des Gillespie; 116 Billy Eunson and Ian Wilkie; 120 Gary Drever.

The next trophy event is the Steven Flett Memorial Shield, on Friday, April 12. It is for mixed doubles, and is in the Legion Club. Players must enter as a pair.
