With just one game to go in the Williamson’s Kirkwall Darts League, all the positions have been decided except the destinations of both wooden spoons.
In the Williamson’s ‘A’ league the Golf Club took second spot behind the Legion with an 8-4 win over Quoyburray ‘B’. And with the Commodores finishing their games with a narrow 7-5 win over RBLM, the golf boys can’t be caught so the Commodores finish in third spot.
The Legion are still on course for the record of undefeated games with two wins by 8-4 over Untouchables and 10-2 against Meadowbank. Those were wins 65 and 66. They cannot equal the 72 set by the Nomads as there’s only one game left in this season. Of those 72 games by the Nomads, 71 were wins with one draw back in the early 1970s.
Quoyburray who are already relegated and are one of the teams fighting to avoid the wooden spoon went down 8-4 twice — both to the Untouchables teams so their meeting this week with Meadowbank will sort out the home for the wooden spoon. The Wanderers have secured fourth spot after a 7-5 win over Sanday who after a bright start have faded badly.
Shapinsay are ‘B’ league champions with a 11-1 thumping of Sands ‘2’, and the Murray Arms join them in the ‘A’ league even though they lost 7-5 to the Legion Arrows.
The Sands have taken third spot although there’s no result in from their game with the Nomads. The Nomads did have a win against Deerness but I think the two surprise sides are Tankerness and the Likely Lads who drew 6-6. Both teams struggled last year but both will finish this season in the top half of the Williamson’s ‘B’ league.
The Shore had a good 10-2 win over the Bilco Boys. Deerness did have a win, 7-5 over the Shore who along with the Sands ‘2’ will be one of the teams who will collect the ‘B’ spoon.
There have been several 180s — including from Brian Moar, Michael Moodie, Neil Drever, Brian Murray, Richard Polson, Graham Louttit, Michael Bain, Gary Wilson, Trevor Shearer, Colin Ross, Roy Foubister, Robbie Norquoy, John Thomson, two from Malcolm Coghill, four from Kevin Gray and six from Ian Wilkie — a record for one week’s playing. Kevin Gray now has 51 180s, also a record.
High checkouts included 102 from Ivan Leslie and Trevor Shearer. Ivan also had a 105 and 116. There were 104 and 158 checkouts from Ray Findlay. The 158 is the top score in the ‘B’ league. Other checkouts were: 114 from Billy Ward, Davy Henderson and Ian Wilkie, 110 Ian Findlay, 120 Steven Walls, 138 Mike Bain and 161 Graham Reid.
Tomorrow night, it’s the first of the charity events with the Steven Flett Memorial Shield for mixed pairs in the Legion. Names by 7.30 p.m. and you must enter with a partner. Then on Wednesday, April 17 it’s the Orkney Championships play off with the K-DDL champions meeting the West Mainland champions so the committee meeting for that night is postponed.
Next big event is the inter league county game on Friday, April 26 in the Masonic at 7 p.m.
