There were mixed fortunes for the East teams in the annual East v West match.
It was the 40th meeting of the ‘A’ teams, and the East moved into a quick 5-1 lead, before the West rallied a bit and took the singles score to 8-4 for the East.
Needing only three for the win, the East shared the doubles 3-3, so won 11-7 for their 33rd win out of the forty played, 1998 was the last time the West won.
The ‘B’ game was a more tense and even game, with the doubles being shared 2-2.
Then the West raced away to take the singles 5-3, needing only one more for victory.
But the East were not finished yet, and took both fours to draw level at 7-7.
So, it was on to the dreaded sudden-death team game.
Missed doubles allowed the West to snatch a 8-7 win to avenge last year’s defeat.
The score now reads East 11, West 7.
In the Williamsons ‘A’ League, the Legion wrapped up the title with a 10-2 drubbing of the Untouchables ‘A’.
It has now been 87 games since they last tasted league defeat — an 8-4 loss to the Untouchables, in January, 2010.
The race for second spot was blown wide open, as the present-day Untouchables came from 4-2 down to beat the Golf Club 7-5.
That allowed the Commodores to move clear, after a 10-2 defeat of the Murray Arms, and an 8-4 loss to RBLM, meant Shapinsay are relegated and collect the wooden spoon, after only one season in the top flight.
In fact, Shapinsay have never managed to stay up after being promoted.
They will be joined in the ‘B’ League next year by either Quoyburray or the Murray Arms, who meet this week.
Quoyburray went down 7-5 in the local derby against Quoyburray ‘B’.
Sanday are putting in a strong finish to the season, following a 7-5 win over the Wanderers.
Sands ‘2’ hold the roost in the Williamsons ‘B’ League, and are still four points to the good after a fine 8-4 defeat of the Legion Arrows.
The Nomads remain in second spot, with a 10-2 defeat of the Bilco Boys, but are being pressurised by the Shore, who are in third spot after two wins — 8-4 over Deerness and 10-2 against the Sands.
The St Ola are also up there, after defeating Meadowbank 9-3, and don’t forget Tankerness, who are having a good season. Their latest win was 7-5, over the Motorhoose.
The Likely Lads v Sands wasn’t played.
