Come and join British Divers Marine Life Rescue at Scapa beach for a day of training and become a Marine Mammal Medic! You will join a nationwide team of volunteers who are trained to respond to whale and dolphin strandings as well as seals that may also need our help. Learn how to administer first aid to some of our most amazing wildlife as well as how to safely get cetaceans back into the water.

You must bring a dry suit or wetsuit, boots and gloves as you will be in and out of the water for most of the day. If you are going to wear a wetsuit then you must bring additional weatherproof clothing to wear whilst out of the water to ensure you do not get cold.

The Shoogly Pencil Club will celebrate nature by creating wild and wonderful artworks at Orkney Library with Ellen Forkin. There will be 6 spaces for P3-P6 age children – booking is essential.

Join the WDC Shorewatch team to look out for different species of whales and dolphins from the shore. Learn how we use different tips and clues to help us identify different species and use our survey equipment to have a look for your self and learn about the different species that can be seen from the Northern Isles.

 

Nature Journalling

Car parking: There is a dedicated carpark at the site. 

When: Saturday 17th 2pm - 3:30pm

Age: All welcome – anyone under 16 should be accompanied by an adult.

Cost:  Children free, RSPB members £6, non-members £8. Bring either your own sketchbook/notebook, or buy for a small one from us for £3.

Come use nature journalling to deepen your observations and connections with the nature. We’ll meet in the carpark see what we can find on the walk to the bird hide (around 10 minutes walk). We’ll then sit in or near the hide building and write about what we can see, hear, and smell outside. Bring a sketchbook if you’d like- we’ll also have some small notebooks and pens. 

 

Rockpooling Event

Join Seasearch and local experts for a fun family event exploring the rockpools around the Brough of Birsay and discovering the creatures within them. A limited number of rockpooling kits available or bring your own equipment.
