Botany Group (2) - August 2018

by Fiona Knox - 18:46 on 07 September 2018

Six of us, Ann, Phylida, Chris, Marguerite, Trevor and Fiona met up at Finstown on 28th August and drove to Refuge Corner, where we walked along the track to Wasdale Loch. Roadside verges at the end of August might initially appear unpromising, however, including plants growing on the shore of the loch, we identified around forty species, not all of them in flower.

Species identified included cats ear, meadowsweet, angelica, sneezewort, red and white clover, devil’s bit scabious, tormentil, birds foot trefoil, meadow vetchling, common chickweed, prickly sowthistle, daisy, creeping thistle, self heal, daisy, hogweed, buttercup, marsh willowherb, common mouseear, cotton grass, mouse ear hawkweed, common cotton grass, horsetail,  tufted vetch, bush vetch, mouse-eared willow, tea willow, autumnal hawkbit, water avens, flag iris, watermint, bogbean, yellow rattle, silverweed,  marsh marigold, speedwell, ?bog stitchwort, red bartsia, redshank and rose bay willow herb.
