Chairman's Blog - September 2018
by Peter Slater - 21:02 on 25 September 2018
The committee met at Vagaland, Stromness on Tuesday 18th September. Ronnie Johnston and Phylida Wright were welcomed as Treasurer and Secretary respectively. Ronnie reported that the finances were in good shape and paid particular tribute to Sally MacKintosh for the care and thoroughness with which she had looked after them.
General Meetings were now arranged for the period to March and there was some discussion of possible speakers that the Chairman might approach to speak thereafter, with a number of good ideas emerging.
Angela Way wished to stand down from organising general meeting refreshments, a task she has carried out quietly and with great efficiency for many years, and for which we are all very grateful. Trevor Kay agreed to look after the supplies and rota from the new year.
The Anniversary Party had generated a good deal of interest, with a two page spread in this month’s Living Orkney magazine. Despite the odd hiccup the rota for writing meetings up in the Orcadian had worked reasonably well, though more volunteers to do this would be welcome. Again, this gave good publicity, and membership had recently risen quite sharply: it now stood at 114. With this number it was felt there might be scope for more groups, and Peter would draft a questionnaire to see what might interest people. Group sizes varied rather a lot: some could do with boosting (e.g. crafts) and others were almost unmanageably large (e.g. Music appreciation).
Judy O’Connor reported on progress in organising the Christmas meal, scheduled for 13th December in the Kirkwall Hotel.
