U3A Photography Group One - February 2022

by Tim Wright - 17:43 on 23 February 2022

Twelve of us met at the Museum in Stromness on a very wet and windy morning. It was a relief to get inside to a warm room to take photos. There is always something to see and read about in the Museum with a great deal on John Rae but also lesser Orcadian Explorers like John Renton. There are lots of details from the Lighthouse Keepers, the Old Orkney Whiskey and a whole floor devoted to fossils, stuffed birds, shells and an enormous Leather Back Turtle. It kept us fully occupied even though we couldn't access the Captain's Cabin Section. Then it was back along the street to the Pier Cafe for lunch.

We perused the photos from Kirkwall Harbour. It is fascinating to see how many different aspects were pictured with few images of the same things. Bouys, bows, boats and birds were the order of the day as everything had to have a "B "in the title. Bins, black stuff, balconies, barbers and BT all featured as well as a beacon. All great photos and a stimulus to those who hadn't printed photos out to do so before next time to show the Group. Thanks to all those who bought prints. It always stimulates conversation and is a good exercise now we can start meeting up again.

The plan is to meet and go to Olad's Wood in South Ronaldsay next time on March 23rd providing the weather is better than today. Hopefully we can then go to the Sands for lunch.

The project for this month is "Rain/Storm". I enclose a photo to get you in the mood for this.

Keep Clicking, Tim.
