Normal Racing

During the summer sailing season Stromness SC offers Snipe racing for Members on Thursday evenings, weather permitting, with the first race start time being 7 pm.  All boats must carry third party insurance of not less than £3 million.  The Club Racing Guide provides a list of all the competitive series.

A safety boat is in attendance whenever official Club racing takes place and is crewed by people with experience. 

The aim each race evening is to have three races: a skipper race, a crew race and a second skipper race.  The crew race is intended to allow those who normally crew to gain experience at helming but sometimes because of conditions or turnout all races are for skippers.

The timing of the second and third races varies and account has to be taken of the arrival of the Northlink ferry, the Hamnavoe, from Scrabster.

Racing normally takes place within the Stromness harbour area, with starting and finishing being from in front of the Stromness SC cabin and compound at Ness Point.

The majority of dinghy sailors in Stromness SC sail Snipes but other types of dinghy can also be accommodated if needed. The Club owns a few four RS Fevas and several Toppers which are good for youngsters and small adults to learn to sail in and has an Optimist which is suitable for very young sailors.
