Walking Group One 25th April 2024

Five hardy souls collected today at Happy Valley for the first Hill Walk of the year .The temperature was cool with a North Easterly wind blowing and a hint of rain on arrival.

Off we set heading towards Russadale Quarry, spotting a Buzzard on the way.Turning into the footpath we remained sheltered from the wind all the way to the top of the hill.

The sun was out at the Quarry and a Greenshank was feeding at the edge of the Lochan. Then it was up the Peat road to the summit with spectacular views across Stenness and Harray Lochs, plus a view of the Closed Road beyond the Watch Stone. On the other side we looked over the Flow and down towards the Oil Platform and South Ronaldsay

Then it was back down after a stop for a snack and finally a walk around Happy Valley itself. The Daffodils planted by James and others were looking lovely and the Bluebells are days away from opening. Then it was on to a well deserved lunch at the Pier Cafe, having walked 4 miles and gone up 800 feet (and down again )

The next walk will be on Friday 24th May and hopefully more hills and views.

Keep moving.

PHOTOGROUP 1 MAY 21st

by Tim Wright - 17:48 on 21 May 2014

Twelve of us attended a very wet Brough of Birsay car Park and rapidly decided that an early tea was the way to go. We retreated to The Palace Tearooms aka Georgie Clark's where a warming cuppa was taken along with a cake or two. We perused the photos from Happy Valley and amazingly very few were repeats .It is surprising how a dozen people can see so many different angles and subjects in such a small area.We were unlucky with the Bluebells as three of our number showed with more recent shots taken in the last few days showed .The Red Door ,the trees ,both upright and in reflection, the fairies, and the Burn all featured heavily in both colour and Black and White.
"Outdoor Activities" included fishermen ,farmers, walkers (both with Dog and without) Rugger ,bird watching, copulating Goats and even a Windsurfer ( I wonder who put that one in ! ) A great variety and a great entry. Thanks to you all as I know some had found it a difficult subject.
The next meeting is at 2pm on Wednesday June 25th at Waulkmill Bay to take photos of flowers ,birds ,sand and sea. Tea will be taken somewhere but we will decide whether to go into town or to Standing Stones .
The project is "Boats" .
Keep clicking
