A great end to the summer youth football season saw an exciting Clouston Cup and Plate played at Picky on Saturday 17th September. Around 150 players took part in 6 hours of football in almost perfect conditions with late summer sunshine but slightly soft underfoot conditions resulting in a few muddy players at the end of the day. The format for the day saw the 15 teams playing in three groups with the league winners and best placed runner up qualifying for the semi-finals of the Clouston Cup and the remaining teams playing for the Clouston Plate.

East United A, Stromness A and Thorfinn A came top of their respective groups winning all four of their matches. They were joined in the Cup semi-finals by Thorfinn B as the best placed second team, winning three of their matches. The full group results were:-

There was little to choose between the four Cup teams with East United A narrowly edging out Stromness A in the first semi-final 1-0 and Thorfinn A eventually beating clubmates Thorfinn B 3-2 on penalties after the match ended goalless. The final was equally tight with few chances and it took a deflected free kick to beat the East goalkeeper for a second half Thorfinn A winner. For Thorfinn this completed the league and cup double with the team having won the league earlier in the summer.

In the Clouston Plate there was a well deserved victory for East United B in the Final with a 5-0 win over a Thorfinn D team who performed very well in their run to the final including a penalty kick victory over Dounby A in the quarter finals. The full results in the Plate were:-

At the end of the day’s play OYDG Chairman Dave Thomas congratulated all the teams on the quality of football before thanking all the coaches who had helped with refereeing throughout the day. He then handed over to competition sponsor Bob Clouston who presented the trophies and winners medals to Thorfinn and East United.

There was double success for Thorfinn as the S1 & Under Leagues were concluded in sunny conditions at Picky on Sunday. A highly exciting A League saw three teams in contention all the way with very little to choose between the East United, Thorfinn and Stromness A teams. The league went all the way and in a winner takes all final match it was Thorfinn A who edged a narrow 1-0 victory over Stromness A to secure the A League. Thorfinn C were the dominant team in the B League with a comfortable winning margin having won all of their 14 matches, with Stromness B finishing second. The results on the final week were:-

An encouraging development of the S1 & Under League this year has been the appearance of two new clubs in Wanderers and Hotspurs. It is great to see both these clubs developing youth set ups and hopefully this is the start of a long and successful period for both clubs in providing alternative playing options for younger players.

At the end of the competition OYDG Chairman Dave Thomas congratulated all the participating teams and especially the winning teams. He thanked the clubs for refereeing and the Kemp families for their continued sponsorships of the leagues. Reid Kemp then presented the EG Kemp Shield and winners trophies to Thorfinn A and the BW Kemp Cup and winners trophies to Thorfinn C.

The second week of fixtures in the S1 & Under Leagues were played in Dounby on Saturday. The A League is proving to be very closely fought with only two points separating the top three clubs – Thorfinn A, Stromness A and East Utd A.  Thorfinn A and East Utd A had an unbeaten week with both beating Stromness A in the process and playing out a goalless draw in the match between each other. Thorfinn C have emerged as clear favourites for the B League having won all ten of their matches thus far.

S2 & UNDER HOURSTON’s INDOOR 4’s

Winners, East Utd A

The W Hourston Indoor 4’s for S2 & Under players took place at Picky on Friday 4th March with 9 teams competing.  It was a strong East United A team who ended up deserved winners after defeating Thorfinn A 3-0 in the final. The East side had stormed through their group matches before beating a young East Utd B team 5-0 in the semi final. Thorfinn A had a much tougher run to the final and needed penalties to win their semi-final against Thorfinn B.

At the end of the competition OYDG Chairman Stephen Crawford complemented all the teams on the excellent standard of football played on the night before congratulating the two finalists. He then handed over to Tom Macphail who presented the Cup and Winners medals to East United and the Runners Up medals to Thorfinn.
