The annual Jim Cormack S3/S4 7 a side Winter League Cup was recently played over 2 Wednesday nights at Stromness 3G on 27 March and 3 April.  Jim has kindly sponsored this event since 2012 and OYDG is indebted to him for his continued support of youth football in Orkney.

Five teams entered the Cup and after the first night Hotspurs topped the table with 2 wins and 6 points, followed by Thorfinn on 4 points and Stromness on 3 points.  East and Dounby were probably too far behind to have a chance of winning the Cup after the first 2 matches but both were capable of springing an upset in the remaining fixtures.

A glorious final evening produced some very good football and a narrow win for Stromness v East and a win for Thorfinn v Hotspurs in the first matches ensured that the final double header would decide the outcome of the Cup.  Stromness played Hotspurs knowing a win for either team was required and Thorfinn played Dounby knowing a win for Thorfinn guaranteed them the Cup.

Stromness found their form against Hotspurs and ran out comfortable winners to put pressure on Thorfinn. The Dounby team dug in well and thanks to resolute defending, good goalkeeping, and the frame of the goal the score was 0-0 at half time.  Thorfinn did score in the second half but Dounby then pressed and the crossbar and the post prevented Dounby from equalising ensuring Thorfinn went on to win 1-0 and secure the Jim Cormack Cup by a point from Stromness.

Thanks to Jim for his continued support of this popular event, to the participating teams and to the referees who volunteered over the 2 nights.
